What this job involves:
As a Lead Engineer at JLL, you'll play a pivotal role in ensuring seamless operations and maintenance of critical building infrastructure across your assigned shift. This position sits at the intersection of technical expertise and team leadership, where you'll oversee the performance of complex mechanical, electrical, and life safety systems while guiding engineering staff to deliver exceptional service. Your work directly impacts the reliability and sustainability of critical operating environments, ensuring high infrastructure availability and client satisfaction through proactive maintenance, real-time problem resolution, and strategic planning.
What your day-to-day will look like:
Lead operations and maintenance activities across your assigned shift, monitoring performance and ensuring all departmental service requests are completed efficiently with minimal disruption to building operations
Oversee and directly operate critical and non-critical system equipment including HVAC, chillers, UPS systems, generators, fire detection and suppression systems, building management systems, and associated infrastructure in raised floor environments
Diagnose malfunctioning equipment, determine corrective action required, and coordinate repair efforts with engineering staff and third-party contractors to restore systems to satisfactory operating condition
Implement and manage the preventative maintenance program for your shift, scheduling tasks strategically to minimize service disruptions while ensuring all equipment receives proper maintenance and documentation
Provide technical guidance, on-the-job training, and leadership support to shift engineers and maintenance technicians, fostering skill development and creating a high-performing team environment
Respond immediately to operational emergencies and system shortcomings, providing real-time problem management and technical direction to ensure infrastructure availability and safety
Develop, review, and approve construction and maintenance work plans, overseeing contractor activities and ensuring all work meets critical environment standards and client requirements
Maintain comprehensive documentation including building rounds and readings, engineering logs, infrastructure drawings, single-line diagrams, and regulatory compliance records
Required qualifications:
Extensive technical knowledge of mechanical systems (HVAC, chillers, plumbing), electrical systems (UPS, generators, switchgear, PDU), and life safety systems (fire alarm, suppression, access control)
Proven experience operating and maintaining critical infrastructure in data center or mission-critical facility environments with raised floor systems
Demonstrated leadership ability to supervise and mentor engineering teams across shift operations
Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose complex equipment failures and implement effective corrective actions under pressure
Thorough understanding of preventative maintenance programs, work order management systems, and facility documentation requirements
Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulatory requirements related to building operations, safety protocols, and compliance standards
Excellent communication skills to coordinate effectively with engineering staff, facility management teams, contractors, and client stakeholders
Preferred qualifications:
Experience with Building Management Systems (BMS), CMMS platforms, and digital monitoring tools for critical infrastructure
Background in energy management initiatives and sustainability best practices within commercial or critical facility environments
Experience developing capital plans and infrastructure upgrade strategies for long-term facility optimization
Active participation in professional trade organizations and commitment to ongoing technical training and industry education
Track record of implementing continuous improvement processes that reduce operational risk and costs
