About the Role

 

As a Lead Data Engineer on our Ventures team, you will:

 

Review and optimize existing database architectures for performance, scalability, and security Define and implement new data stores (relational, NoSQL, cloud warehouses) to meet evolving business needs Lead end-to-end data lifecycle management: ingestion, transformation, storage, and delivery Automate data flows and ETL/ELT pipelines using modern orchestration tools Collaborate with data scientists, analysts, and application teams to translate requirements into robust data solutions Mentor and guide junior data engineers, championing best practices in data modeling, testing, and documentation

You’ll work in an Agile/Scrum environment, participating in daily stand-ups, sprint planning, demos, and retrospectives. Every release cycle, you’ll ensure data solutions are production-ready and performing at scale.

 

What You’ll Do

 

Data Architecture & Modeling

Audit existing schemas and propose optimizations Design star-schema and normalized models to support reporting and analytics

Pipeline Development & Automation

Build scalable ETL/ELT workflows in Python, SQL, or Scala Orchestrate jobs with Apache Airflow, AWS Glue, or equivalent

Cloud Data Platforms

Implement and maintain data solutions on AWS (Redshift, S3, Lambda), Azure (Synapse, Data Factory) or GCP (BigQuery, Cloud Composer)

Performance & Reliability

Monitor and tune query performance, storage costs, and resource usage Establish alerting and self-healing mechanisms for critical pipelines

Collaboration & Leadership

Partner with stakeholders to define data deliverables and SLAs Lead “lunch & learn” sessions to share new tools, techniques, and patterns Provide on-call support for production data issues on a rotating basis

 

To Succeed in This Role

5+ years of professional experience in data engineering or a closely related field Deep expertise in SQL and at least one programming language (Python, Java, Scala) Hands-on experience with cloud data warehouses and ETL frameworks Strong understanding of data modeling, schema design, and normalization best practices Familiarity with containerization (Docker), CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure as code (Terraform, CloudFormation) Proven track record mentoring and leading small engineering teams Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience
