PURPOSE/DUTIES: the primary purpose of the Speech, Language, and Hearing Specialist is to facilitate the varying needs of IEP students under the direction of the Director of Student Services; provide appropriate speech, language and hearing evaluations, recommendations and therapy for students with speech and language needs; attendance at Individualized Education Program meetings; reevaluation of IEP Students in accordance with State and Federal law; support site and staff in the Student Success Team process (including recommendations and assistance with modifications/accommodation for at-risk and IEP Students) and provide professional development to staff regarding developmentally appropriate speech and language development, language delays/deficits, language differences and the referral process. Provides speech and/or language therapy for IEP students who qualify; completes reports, both local and State, as required; is case manager for students with speech IEPs; establishes and maintains case records; works with parents, teachers and other staff to coordinate the education of the student and ensures appropriate goals and objectives are specified in the IEP of each student who is eligible to receive speech and language services. Understands the role of the Speech, Language and Hearing Specialist in the academic growth of students. Has working knowledge of alternative augmentative communication devices. Shares in the sponsorship of school activities and participates in faculty committees.

  JOB TITLE:                LANGUAGE, SPEECH AND HEARING SPECIALIST

 

Job Purpose Statement:

 The primary purpose of language, speech, and hearing services is the remediation of disorders of communication. The term “communication disorder” means impairment in language, speech, or hearing, or some combination of these. The consequences of disabilities of communication may be far reaching. A disorder of communication may inhibit an individual’s social adjustment, restrict his economic potential, reduce his learning ability, and affect normal maturation of thought processes.

Under the guidance and direction of the Director, Student Services and immediately responsible to the Director, Student Services, and School Principal while on the school site, the Language, Speech and Hearing Specialist assumes the following:

 Essential Job Functions:

Establishes and maintains a language, speech and hearing program within the school.  Screens and assesses referred students to identify language, speech, or hearing impaired students.  Communicates with school personnel to promote interest in and understanding of the language therapy program.  Consults with teachers and others regarding criteria for referral of pupils.  Completes reports, both local and state, as required.  Establishes and maintains case records.  Confers with parents to gain maximum effectiveness from therapeutic services.  Works with teachers to coordinate the education of the language handicapped child.  Coordinates services with special services personnel and other staff relating to other learning programs.  Provides periodic evaluation at least annually for each child enrolled in the program and recommends dismissal of children to the IEP Team according to the objectives and the professional judgment of the therapist.  Refers children to other professional personnel and agencies in the school and community, as appropriate.  Performs basic attendance accounting, as required.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

Maintains professional competency through participation in in-service education and self-selected professional growth activities, including community service.  Attends regular and special meetings called by the Principal or Director, Student Services.  Shares in the sponsorship of school activities and participates in faculty committees.  Participates in Individualized Education Program Team meetings.  Ensures appropriate goals and objectives are specified in each pupil’s IEP who is eligible to receive speech and language services.
