IBCLC provides direct lactation care and education to patients and staff to ensure that a high quality cost effective service is delivered This role is responsible for providing comprehensive advanced and specialized health services across the continuum of the patientrsquos lactation experience This requires them to have the ability to work collaboratively with the Maternity Womenrsquos Health Services to identify lactation and breastfeeding problems and create a comprehensive lactationbreastfeeding plan of care These responsibilities include but are not limited to patient and staff education a comprehensive consultation and partnerships with the IBCLC team and health care resources within our organization network and community Job ResponsibilitiesmiddotAssists in the establishment of lactation breastfeeding through education and direct patient care in the antepartum intrapartum and postpartum periods middotAssesses for lactationbreastfeeding challenges Works with providers to establish an individual plan of action that includes interventions counseling feeding observations and recommendations for managing the lactationbreastfeeding difficultiesmiddotProvides written documentation of plan of car and treatment recommendationsmiddotProvides emotional support for patients and their families with lactationbreastfeeding difficulties Practices active listening skills to fully assess a patientrsquos needs Provides reassurance acceptance and encouragements that protects promotes and supports breastfeeding and the informed decision to use formula for infant feedingsmiddotProvides information in an unbiased manner and encourages parents to make informed choices based on their own needs and preferences Demonstrates acceptance of patientrsquos feelings rights and choices as evidenced by patient feedbackmiddotWorks collaboratively with staff to develop breastfeeding policies and protocols for all lactating and breastfeeding dyads middotShares educational resources with staff through in services one to one communication and at competencyskills day eventsmiddotParticipates in teaching breastfeeding classes and plans class material to meet participantrsquos level of understanding Relates to clients in a supportive affirmative and open manner Offers sensitive and responsiveness to cultural language preferences and differencesmiddotRepresents Hartford Hospital as a breastfeeding resource to the community through public speaking and eventsmiddotParticipates in lactationbreastfeeding researchmiddotPerform other
