Labourer - Works

Job Details:
Temporary Full Time (CUPE 136T).

Posting Status:
Open to all current Town of Oakville employees and external applicants.

Duration: 
10 seasonal positions starting October 20, 2025, ending April 3, 2026.

Closing Date:

Consideration may be given to applicants who currently do not possess a DZ license if a fully qualified candidate is not available in the applicant pool. A successful applicant without the pre-requisite certification will be compensated at the Works Operations – Winter Labourer Band 1 rate of $29.18.

Please Note: The position will be required to work the Winter Patrol Shift. Successful candidates may be required to work various rotating shifts including days, afternoons, midnights and weekends. Shift possibilities include the following:

6:00am – 2:30pm (8 hrs.)

2:00pm – 10:30pm (8 hrs.)

8:00pm – 6:30am (10 hrs.)

6:00am – 4:30pm (10 hrs.)

12:00pm – 10:30pm (10 hrs.)

Shifts and shift locations will be assigned depending on operational needs and are subject to change.

Job Responsibilities:

Works Labourers are responsible for the safe operation, maintenance and service of Roads and Works equipment, and the performance of physical labour as required. Functions performed in this position are in accordance with established procedures and practices. Work is checked and reviewed as well.

This position will also:

Pick up debris and litter from roadsides, creeks, parking lots, etc.Hand dig and back fill where necessary for storm sewer, catch basin and manhole repairs and assist in the placement of pipe, manholes and catch basinsPrepare ground by hand digging, raking and laying sodCollect leaves, limbs and brush; rake and clean up areasHand shovel hot/cold asphalt; rough rake; sweep and clean up for asphalt repairShovel snow and salt walkways as requiredImplement traffic control plan and act as a flag person on roadwaysAssist in the maintenance and seasonal conversion of equipmentOperate pickup trucks, sidewalk snow clearing machines and other small equipment and tools as requiredPatrol roads, operate trucks, small equipment and tools as requiredMaintain vehicles and equipment in a clean, tidy condition, making regular inspections, reporting defects, etc. in a prescribed mannerWill be required to work a fixed or rotating shift during the winter season and possibly be required to work weekend and holiday shifts.May also be assigned periods of stand-by/on-call duties for overnights, weekends and holidaysApply safety precautions and procedures in the performance of duties in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and policies of the Town of OakvillePerform other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications:

Minimum of Grade 12 education or acceptable equivalent in education and experience.Previous related experience in roads and works or parks maintenance and related equipment.The successful candidate must hold and provide a copy of a valid and unrestricted Ontario Driver’s License Class DZ minimum (standard and automatic transmission) with a driving record that demonstrates responsible and safe driving behaviour. Note: Applicants with 6 or more points are ineligible for consideration. The successful applicant, who is a new hire, will be required to provide the Corporation with a current drivers abstract (no older than 30 days) and pass a Town administered road test prior to assuming the position.Must possess an understanding of the Highway Traffic Act and knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety ActDemonstrated mechanical aptitude, effective communication, both oral and written, customer service and problem-solving skills.Proficient time management skills and flexibility in adjusting between a variety of duties.Ability to work with minimal supervision and as part of a team.Preference will be given to candidates having a minimum of 1 years' previous experience with machines and equipment used which includes: trucks, vans, tractors, loaders, mowing equipment, small hand equipment.Must be willing to work a 40-hour workweek in varying weather conditions and be available for shift work as required. May be required to work a rotating shift, including weekends.
