LABORATORY TECHNICIAN
**Description** Description: Pilgrim’s is the second largest poultry producer in the United States producing nearly 1 out of every 5 chickens. With that comes a significant responsibility to produce safe, wholesome products. Therefore, Pilgrim’s is committed to food safety and the reduction of foodborne pathogens across our vertically integrated business. In this part time position, there will be opportunities to assist with many of the innovative food safety research projects being conducted by Pilgrim’s to improve and lead poultry food safety. More specifically, these research projects focus on the industry applications of novel pre-harvest and post-harvest interventions aimed to reduce pathogen loads, and therefore, ultimately reduce consumer risk of foodborne illness related to chicken consumption. Involvement in hands-on microbiological laboratory experience ranging from the basics, like setting Petrifilm™, to working with advanced molecular technologies, such as PCR. Additionally, exposure to the poultry business, both at the plant level and the live production level, will be provided for a better understanding of the poultry business as a whole. Responsibilities: Duties include: • On farm or in the processing plant collection of samples. • Prepares medias, reagents and solutions required for tests. • Performs laboratory tests according to prescribed standards. • Starts and operates laboratory equipment and instruments. • Cleans laboratory equipment, glassware, supplies, and lab as needed for projects. • Recording, analyzing and reporting of project results. • Assisting with project summaries and write-ups, including possible publications. • Other duties as assigned. Requirements and/or Qualifications: • Education: Poultry Science, Food Science, Animal Science, or Pre-Vet student; completion of courses in biology, microbiology, animal science, and/or statistics preferred • Experience and/or Expertise: Microbiology laboratory experience preferred, particularly with the pathogens Salmonella and/or Campylobacter. • Difficulty of Duties: Ability to work independently at times after receiving proper technical training. • Computer Skills: Basic knowledge of computer systems and Microsoft Office products including Excel. • Availability: Willingness to occasionally work outside of normal business hours, may require availability during nights and weekends.
