What we want
The Laboratory Manager, under direction, oversees operations and supervises staff in a histopathology diagnostic laboratory. Coordinates training of lab personnel and graduate students, monitors lab for safety and conformance, prepares standard operation procedures and resolves client issues. Provides technical assistance in research projects.

Qualifications
Required Education and Experience
+ Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
+ Five years of laboratory related management experience.
Required Licenses and Certifications
+ Histotechnician (HT) or Histotechnologist (HTL) certification by ASCP.
Preferred Qualifications
+ Management experience in a histology laboratory.
+ Previous experience validating immunohistochemical antibodies for use in research and diagnostics, previous experience with fluorescence in situ hybridization.
Required Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
+ Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.
+ Knowledge of routine laboratory histology equipment.
+ Knowledge of specialized histology staining techniques, including immunohistochemistry.
+ Must not have inhibiting allergies or sensitivities to organic compounds, solvents, and dogs or cats.
Responsibilities
Operations, Quality Control & Compliance
+ Monitors quality control and assay performance to ensure accuracy of reported results.
+ Assures timely entry and release of accurate results to meet laboratory turn-around time goals.
+ Produces laboratory generated standard and quality control material, including preparation and implementation of standard operating procedures.
+ Maintains adequate supply of in-house standards and quality control as needed for diagnostic testing.
+ Ensures laboratory compliance processes, recordkeeping, and reporting- including preparations for lab inspections.
+ Monitors lab for safety and conformance and oversees the management of all laboratory waste. Identifies and reports incidents of nonconformance.
+ Manages and maintains adequate supplies and reagents as needed for efficient laboratory function. Oversees inventory, requests quotes and orders, oversees receipt of lab supplies and reagents, reviews and reconciles invoices from vendors, external laboratories, and pathology consultants to ensure accuracy and works with the finance department to manage the process of paying vendors and consultants.
+ Monitors equipment and schedules maintenance or repair as needed. Maintains preventative maintenance contracts. Researches and purchases equipment as needed.
+ Oversees shipping, receival, processing, sectioning, staining, and archiving of internal and external research samples under supervision of the GI lab faculty and director of operations.
+ May assist with research projects within the Gastrointestinal laboratory, as well as support other researchers on a fee-for-service basis.
Supervision/Management
+ Recruits, trains, supervises, and schedules employees in the histology laboratory section.
+ Provides crucial input into hiring, annual evaluation, or other performance evaluations.
+ Provides training to graduate students and others as requested by upper management and faculty members.
+ Provides budget monitoring and management for the histology section.
+ Oversees implementation of and training for Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) workflow.
+ Ensures the proper use of the LIMS and online server for digital pathology and collaborates with IT support to troubleshoot issues to minimize disruptions in lab operations.
Histology Testing
+ Serves as a working manager by actively participating and performing lab services on a regular basis, including but not limited to: assisting with handling of surgical specimens; performing basic preventative maintenance on microtomes, automatic stainer, cover slipper and other equipment as specified; and loading and programming of tissue processor following established procedures.
+ Coordinates, validates, troubleshoots and performs histological processing, histochemical staining, immunohistochemistry, fluorescence in situ hybridization, and other tests to be developed in the future within the laboratory.
+ Oversees the prioritization of testing to optimizing team efficiency.
