Job Summary: The Laboratory Assistant collects, prepares, and processes laboratory specimens with an emphasis on accuracy, timeliness, completeness, safety, and compliance. The Laboratory Assistant also performs support functions for all departments within the laboratory while maintaining a professional image and exhibiting excellent customer relations with patients, visitors, physicians, and co-workers.
Follow proper specimen identification procedures during specimen collection and labeling.
Collects, prepares, processes, stores and/or transports specimens using correct techniques and anticoagulants.
Investigate, document, and resolve specimen issues to ensure timely and accurate reporting of results.
Perform routine monitoring of temperatures for refrigerators, freezers, incubator(s) and maintenance activities for instruments. Troubleshoots instruments and documents issues as needed.
Receive incoming phone calls, documents, and follow through on incoming requests.
Performs a variety of clerical duties and housekeeping tasks involved in maintaining the laboratory in a clean, orderly, and safe condition to include assisting in ordering supplies.
Assist with phlebotomy lecture preparation and instructions if applicable and help train new students and staff.
Effectively use computer options relevant to job duties.
Perform support functions as needed, such as microbiology, core lab, anatomical pathology, blood bank, assist in Family Medicine if applicable and perform transcription duties if applicable.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
3 years of fulltime experience in a laboratory setting.
Education:
High school diploma or GED and phlebotomy certification or in lieu of phlebotomy certification, on the job training with three years of fulltime experience in a laboratory setting or
Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or Bachelor's degree
