Using sophisticated laboratory equipment, Lab Technicians look for bacteria, parasites, and other microorganisms, match blood for transfusions, analyze the chemical content of body fluids, and test for drug levels in the blood (to show how a patient is responding to treatment). They also count cells and look for abnormal cells in blood and body fluids. In the clinical laboratory setting, you will utilize microscopes, cell counters, automated instruments and computerized analyzers to conduct testing. Laboratory findings are then communicated to the physician to support clinical decision-making. Responsibilities also include receiving and accessioning laboratory specimens, as well as performing specimen investigation procedures to identify and resolve any issues or discrepancies.

This is a regular PRN position, with caregivers working varying shifts between 10:30 p.m. – 6:00 a.m.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

Receive and accession laboratory specimens into the LIS.  

Retrieve, sort, track and deliver specimens.  

Perform specimen investigation procedures to resolve lab specimen issues or problems. 

Verify accurate documentation relative to specimen processing.  

Maintain patient, specimen and tracking data using the laboratory computer system, tracking and software/devices. 

Prepare specimens for analysis and accept or reject specimens.  

Perform manual processing (centrifuge, aliquoting and routine maintenance).  

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

High school diploma or GED 

One year of lab experience  

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

Associate's degree in science. This will substitute the required experience

Physical Requirements:

Ability to perform specimen handling techniques and take measurements.

Ability to perform work in a stationary position for extended periods.

Ability to move throughout the department and hospital system.

Handles and transports biohazardous materials and potential carcinogens.

Ability to differentiate color, hue, saturation, and tones.

Ability to lift/move up to 50 lbs.
