Lab Technician 1 or 2, Department of Surgery

The Department of Surgery seeks applicants for a Lab and Research Technician 1 or 2 to work in the lab of Dr. Samantha Ruff.  Level will be determined by qualifications.  Lab and Research Technician employees focus on performing routine research tasks and developing skills. They assume routine to moderately complex technical support for research projects. Work is routine and can be performed with some degree of independence when following established protocols and procedures. Lab and Research Technician employees perform tasks as assigned by supervisor.

Responsibilities

Perform similar duties to Lab and Research Aide, such as collecting specimens, setting up and performing experiments of a repetitive nature; and preparing culture media, chemicals, reagents, and solutions as instructed, and cell culturing.Tasks will include abdominal suturing during animal surgeries (this can be taught), monitoring mice after survival surgery, administering medications through intraperitoneal injection (this can be taught), taking care of the breeder colonies, genotyping of genetic editing of mice and following protocol as laid out by the institution, and refilling water/food. Prepare support materials, compare and assist with analyses of data and write reports.Operate, adjust, and maintain specific scientific apparatuses and instruments. Notify lab manager when supplies are running low.Record accurate information and logs of experimental data.Keep informed of new lab techniques.Provide routine, technical, and administrative support to research projects.In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Minimum Qualifications for Lab and Research Technician 1:

Education: High school diploma or equivalentExperience: At least 1 year of lab experience, which may include student experience. Bachelor's degree will be considered in lieu of experience.

Minimum Qualifications for Lab and Research Technician 2:

Education: Associate's degreeExperience: At least 2 years of lab experience which may include student experience.  Bachelor's degree in related science will be considered in lieu of experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience and comfort working with miceExperience in western blots, cell culture, ELISA, PCR, and RNA and protein extraction

Physical Demands

This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation

Salary will be commensurate with education and experience.

This is a restricted position, which is dependent on funding and is contingent upon funding availability. This position has a term limit of 1 year after which continued employment will depend on department need and funding.

This position is based in Charlottesville, VA, and must be performed fully on-site.
