Lab Tech 2 or Lab Specialist

At the University of Virginia, investigators in the Beirne B. Carter Center for Immunology Research (Carter Immunology Center) seek a fundamental understanding of how the immune system works. If they can determine, on the most basic level, how the immune system distinguishes between healthy and harmful cells, this could lead to revolutionary new treatments and cures based on controlling the immune response.     

 

Position Summary 

The Sun Lab in the Carter Immunology Center at the University of Virginia, is currently seeking a Lab Tech 2 or Laboratory Specialist to become a participating member of the Sun Lab. The primary purpose of this junior level position is to assist with performing complex experiments, per the direction of Principal Investigator or senior staff, to perform biological, immunological, chemical or physical analysis. 

  

The successful candidate will work with students, post-docs, and other members of the lab to assist in conducting all aspects of experiments. The position requires coordinating research projects and logistics with other lab members; compliance with University, Federal, and State policies and procedures; consulting with junior faculties and Principle Investigator regularly; and oversight of laboratory purchasing, equipment, and supplies required for operation of the laboratory.  The individual should be self-guided and creative in seeking possible solutions to experimental/design challenges at hand and have strong communication skills.   

 

Responsibilities 

Participate in research work involving treatment operations and experiments with animals to including weaning and genotyping mice. 

Use of immunology assays including flow cytometry staining, cell culture, transfection and transduction and analysis and ELISA. 

 Prepare support materials, compare and assist with analyses of data and write reports. Assist with literature reviews. 

Record accurate information and logs of experimental data 

Keep informed of new lab techniques 

Provide technical and administrative support to research projects 

In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned. 

 

Minimum Qualifications 

Lab and Research Tech 2: 

Education: Associate's degree. 

Experience: At least 2 years of lab experience, which may include student experience.  Bachelor's degree in related science will be considered in lieu of experience. 

  

Lab Specialist:  

Education: Bachelor's degree. 

Experience: 3 years of experience. 6 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree. 

 

Physical Demands 

This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation. 

 

Position Type & Work Location

This is a restricted position, which is dependent on funding and is contingent upon funding availability. 

This position is based in Charlottesville, VA, and must be performed fully on-site.
