Discover Impactful Work:

The Lab Support Engineer provides system analysis and maintenance for new and existing laboratory instrumentation across various sites. The role involves working with staff from different departments to produce requirements, facilitate validation and qualification of laboratory instrumentation, and train staff in troubleshooting and operation. The engineer also interacts with vendors for technology demonstrations and supports the introduction and ongoing use of new technologies.

A Day in the Life:

Performs unit system tests (IQ/OQ/Calibration) and, as needed, PQ (Performance Qualification) and validation testing.

Prepares detailed system specifications based on user requirements for instrumentation and coordinates demonstration units with vendors.

Develops instrumentation validation protocols for mainstream analysis.

Develops SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) and testing procedures for emerging technologies and performance qualification regiments for existing technologies.

Prepares system documentation, including requirements documents, specification documents, test plans, and user manuals for instrumentation.

Coordinates with Operations staff on the deployment of instrumentation and provides training to end-users on newly deployed technology systems.

Oversees the installation of new instrumentation.

Troubleshoots and trains new staff in the troubleshooting of existing instrumentation.

Evaluates lab support records for compliance with SOPs, reviews for completeness and accuracy, and reports findings.

Keys to Success:

Education

Bachelor's degree or equivalent and relevant formal academic/vocational qualification.

Experience

Previous experience (comparable to 8+ years) that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job.

In some cases, a combination of appropriate education, training, and/or directly related experience will be considered sufficient to meet the role's requirements.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Working knowledge and understanding of laboratory equipment and troubleshooting foundations.

Extensive knowledge of LS-MS, HPLC, MS, relational databases, and instrumentation operation/data reduction.

Familiarity with systems used at PPD or within the CRO/Pharmaceutical industry.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Demonstrated problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.

Attention to detail and ability to multi-task.

Ability to train others.

Ability to work in a collaborative team environment.
