Lab Supervisor- Chemistry

Position Summary

The general supervisor provides day-to-day supervision of testing personnel and the reporting of test results. In the absence of the Medical and/or Administrative Directors, the supervisor is responsible for the proper performance of all laboratory procedures and reporting of test results.

Primary Position Responsibilities

1.

Must be accessible to testing personnel to resolve technical problems in accordance with policies and procedures established by the laboratory directors.

2.

Responsible for providing day-to-day supervision of high complexity test performance by testing personnel.

3.

Assures that all remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications and quality control limits.

4.

Responsible for monitoring testing to ensure that acceptable results are generated. Ensures that patient results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is functioning properly.

5.

Evaluates and documents the performance (competency) of testing personnel based on time frame of regulatory agencies and the Medical Center.

6.

Works within the personnel and expense budgets assigned to the section.

7.

Is expected to perform bench testing as needed based on staffing and to assist the staff as needed.

8.

Responsible for maintaining Laboratory Information System as required for laboratory section supervised.

9.

Additional duties/responsibilities as requested.

Laboratory administration, Laboratory supervisors and staff, nursing staff, hospital administration, and other hospital support staff.

Medical Laboratory Scientists, Medical Laboratory Technicians, Laboratory Assistants

Qualifications

Minimum Education:

Required:

Bachelor’s Degree in chemical, biological, clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution and qualifies as testing personnel under CLIA regulations.

Preferred:

None


Minimum Years of Experience (Amount, Type and Variation):

Required:

2 years in a high complexity laboratory

Preferred:

At least one year as a supervisor


License, Registry or Certification:

Required:

ASCP registry in Medical Laboratory Science, or specific registry in the specialty they will be supervising

Preferred:

Specialist Certification from ASCP


Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities:

Required:

Basic Microsoft Office, and LIS computer skills. Personnel skills. Basic laboratory skills.  Good customer service and telephone etiquette.
