The Department of Pediatrics at the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Medicine seeks applicants to support Dr. Fernando Ruiz's laboratory for an experienced Laboratory Specialist. Lab Specialists provide technical support by performing complex lab and research-related tasks. They specialize in research methods and equipment functions specific to investigations, adapting methods and procedures to meet research needs.
Job Responsibilities
Provide technical support in laboratory environments, executing complex lab and research-related tasksAct as specialists in research methods and equipment functions relevant to ongoing investigationsAdapt methods and procedures as necessary to meet the evolving needs of research projectsUndertake diverse and longer-term assignments, displaying expertise in addressing non-routine challengesPerform daily activities autonomously, demonstrating proficiency and reliability in executing tasks without supervisionProvide oversight and guidance on longer-term assignments, ensuring their successful completionFacilitate training sessions for team members on work processes and policies, contributing to knowledge dissemination and skill development within the organizationIn addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assignedMinimum Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degreeExperience: 2 years of experience (4 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree)Preferred Qualifications
Experience in laboratory settings, with a focus on research-related tasksExperience in handling enteropathogens and cell culture aseptic techniquesExperience in microbiology, molecular biology, and DNA recombinant techniquesStrong adaptability and problem-solving skills are essential for addressing non-routine challengesExcellent communication and interpersonal skills, facilitating effective collaboration within multidisciplinary teamsPhysical Demands
This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
