**Description:**
**JOB SUMMARY**
Completes send-out process for specimens referred to outside reference laboratories, retrieves specimens from storage for add-on testing or other needs, and aliquots specimens for in-house and send-out tests. Cross-trained to cover areas of client services and phlebotomy.
**ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS**
A. Prepares specimens to be sent to reference laboratories, places orders electronically or completes the proper test requisition, and maintains record of all specimens sent to outside laboratories.
B. Completes batch list and packages Mayo reference lab specimens daily.
C. Manages problems related to reference lab specimens including but not limited to taking calls from the reference lab related to specimen acceptability and contacting clients for additional information.
D. Assists phlebotomy staff with specimen collections, as needed, following standard work practices including use of the phlebotomy cart and ability to ride in an elevator.
E. Accurately identifies patients prior to collection of specimens using two patient identifiers as established by hospital/laboratory policy. After collection and in the presence of the patient, accurately labels specimens following established hospital/laboratory policy.
F. Follows and understands downtime procedures when any or all of the computer systems are down that affect laboratory orders.
G. Operates computer equipment and software programs relative to performance of essential job functions and other laboratory related requirements.
H. Serves as a steward for the hospital’s human and material resources. Meets productivity expectations of the unit/department. Utilizes and maintains appropriate supplies in lab section, including kits required for tests referred to outside laboratories.
I. Retrieves specimens from storage for additional testing following standard work processes for the specimen retrieval system.
J. Performs all duties and responsibilities as outlined in CLIA regulations.
K. Provides competent patient care to the above indicated patient populations by obtaining and appropriately interpreting data, making appropriate decisions based on demonstrated knowledge of age-specific growth and development, and appropriately adapting procedures and treatments.
M. Supports and abides by all medical center, departmental, and safety policies and procedures. Proactively identifies safety concerns surrounding the work environment.
O. Performs other responsibilities as requested by manager or department head.
**POSITION QUALIFICATIONS**
**Education:**
1. High School education is required.
2. Graduate of a Medical Assistant Program or Higher degree, ie AA, BS, BA in the medical field is preferred. Educational transcript required for verification.
**Experience:**
1. Previous office laboratories, phlebotomy, or processing experience is preferred.
**Special Skills, Competencies, and Aptitudes:**
1. Ability to prioritize multiple orders in a rapid and accurate manner in order to provide timely service to all patients.
2. Must have Excellent Customer Service skills.
3. Ability to make sound, independent decisions.
4. Must have the ability to communicate effectively with other hospital personnel and patients.
5. Must be able to work independently and follow through on assignments with minimal direction.
6. Understands that errors may have serious consequences for patients.
7. Must be able to ride in elevator and push/pull phlebotomy cart.
8. Must provide proof of Basic Life Support (BLS Healthcare Provider, American Heart Association; or American Red Cross, Professional Rescuer-LIVE class only) via current card prior to employment or within 30 days of hire and maintains current status.
9. Completes Mandatory Reporting: Child and Dependent Adult Abuse requirement within 6 months of hire and renews this requirement every 3 years.
