Lab Assistant

Receives all surgical pathology and cytology specimens and test requisitions in the laboratory. Checks test requisition for complete

patient data. Obtains missing information when necessary. Prioritizes specimens prior to entering data in laboratory information system (LIS). Manually logs in

specimens when computer system is down. Labels specimens with LIS accession number and delivers specimens to appropriate sections. Performs daily cleaning

and organization of Gross Room and Frozen Section Room instruments and supplies. Prepares solutions (Formalin, formol-alcohol, Camoys solution, decal,

etc.). Neutralizes, checks, and disposes of formalin waste. Performs routine maintenance of Frozen Section Room instrumentation. Picks up specimens from

surgery and clinic areas. The supervisor makes continuing or individual assignments by indicating generally what is to be done, problems to be anticipated, quantity and quality of work expected, deadlines, and priority of assignments, and suggests ways of handling and resolving problems.

Shift:

• Monday- Friday with rotating weekends required

• Swing Shift, Must be ok with working either 1pm-9pm or 3pm-12am

What you will do:

• Accessions specimens according to established priority.

• Preform quality testing of samples (values of red blood cells, pathogen testing, platelets, donor materials)

• Checks formalin waste for effective neutralization prior to disposal.

• Checks test requisition forms for complete information and obtains missing information if necessary

• Cleans and stocks Gross Room.

• Compares information from test requisition form with specimen labels and resolves identification problems.

• Distributes accessioned specimens to appropriate locations.

• Enters patient demographic information into LIS and orders appropriate examination code.

• Maintains appropriate health and safety standards as directed by federal/state and accrediting agency laws/guidelines.

• Maintains instruments and equipment in the Gross and Frozen Section Rooms.

• Manipulates and edits computer fields to ensure proper billing, unique accessioning number, and correct documentation for each specimen received.

• Participates in quality assurance projects as appropriate

• Receives all specimens into the lab from a variety of sources and routes.

• Retrieves specimens from surgery and clinics.

Education Qualifications:

• High School Diploma or GED equivalent and 3 years of direct experience in a blood testing lab

• Bachelors in Science or related field and 1 year of lab experience

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Must be ok with working with human specimens, must be ok with sight of blood

• Ability to establish good working relationships with a variety of professional, technical and nontechnical staff

• Ability to organize, prioritize, multi-task, and adapt to changing priorities

• Ability to speak, read, write, and understand English effectively at a level appropriate for the job

• Knowledge of basic laboratory testing procedures, laboratory precautions, and use and care of common laboratory equipment

• Knowledge of instruments, methods and materials used in a hospital laboratory

• Knowledge of medical terminology

• Knowledge of various nontechnical needs of a laboratory, usually acquired from a combination of previous work experience and/or schooling

• Skills: Data entry

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $35.00/hr.
