Job Title: Junior Accountant
Job Description

This Junior Accountant role supports the accounting operations of a small, fast-growing construction company that specializes in building athletic fields and sports facilities. You will work in a hands-on, project-based environment and gain exposure to full-cycle accounting, job costing, financial reporting, and construction-specific accounting practices. The position offers the opportunity to be trained directly by the controller and to grow into a more senior accounting role over time.

ResponsibilitiesAssist with maintaining the general ledger, including preparing journal entries and performing account reconciliations.Support month-end and year-end close processes to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting.Help maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records across all accounting functions.Track and analyze project costs within Deltek accounting and project management software.Assist with preparing job cost reports and ensure accurate allocation of expenses to specific projects.Collaborate with project managers to monitor job performance, cost variances, and profitability.Assist in preparing monthly financial statements and management reports for leadership.Support variance analysis and provide financial insights to leadership to aid in decision-making.Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow planning activities.Process vendor invoices and support timely and accurate payments to suppliers.Assist with customer billing and collections, including preparing invoices and following up on outstanding balances.Monitor accounts receivable and help reduce past-due balances.Assist with payroll processing and related reporting requirements.Maintain payroll records and coordinate with benefits providers as needed.Ensure compliance with applicable payroll regulations and company policies.Support compliance with federal, state, and local accounting and tax requirements.Assist external CPA partners with tax preparation and year-end reporting.Support audits and financial reviews by preparing schedules, documentation, and responses to inquiries.Perform bank and credit card reconciliations on a regular basis.Monitor cash flow and help maintain appropriate cash balances to support operations.Utilize and maintain Deltek accounting and project management systems to support accurate financial data.Identify opportunities for process improvements and help implement stronger internal controls.Support system optimization efforts and improvements in financial and project reporting.Provide general accounting and administrative support to the controller and leadership team.Assist with a variety of tasks needed in a small company environment, including responsibilities that may fall outside of standard accounting duties.Demonstrate flexibility and willingness to learn new tasks and responsibilities as the company grows.Essential SkillsDegree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.At least 2 years of accounting experience, preferably within the engineering or construction industry.Understanding of job costing and percentage-of-completion accounting.Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and/or Apple Numbers for financial analysis and reporting.Solid knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).Experience with accounting functions such as accounts payable, accounts receivable, invoicing, reconciliations, general ledger, bookkeeping, and cost accounting.Strong attention to detail and accuracy in all financial work.Ability to take direction while also working independently and managing multiple priorities.Analytical and problem-solving skills to interpret financial data and resolve discrepancies.Strong communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with project managers, leadership, and external partners.High level of integrity and confidentiality when handling sensitive financial and payroll information.Ability to learn quickly, be adaptable, and absorb new accounting and finance skills.Interest in working in a small, growing company and willingness to help where needed.Additional Skills & QualificationsExperience in a construction or engineering environment with project-based accounting is highly desirable.Familiarity with Deltek or similar accounting and project management software is a plus.Experience supporting payroll processing and benefits coordination.Background in cost accounting and project-based financial tracking.Demonstrated ability to identify and suggest process improvements and internal control enhancements.Comfort working closely with a controller and leadership team and growing into increased responsibility over time.Work Environment

This role is based in Smyrna, TN, within a small, project-based construction company that builds high-quality athletic fields and sports facilities for schools, municipalities, and private organizations. The company has fewer than 30 employees and emphasizes a collaborative, team-oriented culture with a strong work ethic and commitment to delivering exceptional results. You will work closely with the controller and project managers in a hands-on environment that offers exposure to full-cycle accounting, job costing, and financial reporting. The setting is typical of a small construction office, where flexibility and a willingness to assist with a variety of tasks are valued. Standard business hours are expected, with occasional additional time as needed during busy periods such as month-end, year-end, or major project cycles. Dress is generally business casual appropriate for an office within a construction-focused organization.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Smyrna, TN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $33.00 - $37.50/hr.
