About our Team

As part of our team, you will manage the operational process for your own portfolio of academic journals whilst collaborating with a large team of other Journal Managers. You will be a member of a collaborative and inclusive team that encourages autonomy and personal development, whilst working together to achieve our department objectives and key results. You will contribute to a supportive team culture by sharing knowledge, ideas, and best practice. Our UK Journal Management department is centrally located in Exeter, with six large teams consisting of Journal Managers, Senior Journal Managers and Executive Journal Managers. We actively support internal mobility and career progression across our Journal Management teams and wider organization. Many of our team members have grown into new roles through internal development opportunities, and we encourage applications from those looking to build a long-term career with us. We operate a hybrid working policy. We are office-based and request attendance one day per week. The office is open and available most days for staff who prefer to come in.

About the Role

As Journal Manager, you will be responsible for the operational oversight of a portfolio of academic journals. This includes optimizing journal configurations and workflows to enhance performance. You will cultivate and maintain professional relationships with global stakeholders—including society partners, editors, authors, reviewers, and internal teams—primarily through email correspondence and virtual meetings. We have a comprehensive training and mentoring programme which will support you to be successful in the role. 

Responsibilities

Become the operational expert for your portfolio so you can offer a first-class, personalised service to our society partners and external customers (researchers/editors/authors/reviewers)

Support and work closely with the other key contacts responsible for the success of the journals (societies, editors, publishers, third-party suppliers, and other internal teams)

Build and maintain strong working relationships with your internal and external stakeholders through trust, reliability, and expertise

Continuously monitor and troubleshoot editorial and production processes, ensuring deadlines are met from submission to publication

Use reporting to spot trends in data and drive process improvements for maximum speed and efficiency

Requirements

You have excellent written and verbal communication skills that enable you to build strong relationships with customers/stakeholders

You can learn new systems and complex technical processes/workflows, and your communication skills allow you to articulate technical problems to a variety of stakeholders in an understandable way

You thrive on autonomy, and you’re comfortable driving results and change through virtual relationships

You have experience of managing deadlines, and you feel comfortable prioritising and communicating when problems arise

You can work in our Exeter office one day per week
