Investigator, State Public Defender’s Office
Full-time (40 hours)
The Idaho State Public Defender (SPD) is a newly created state agency which provides trial representation to indigent criminal defendants pursuant to Idaho Code §§ 19-6005, 19-6009 (effective 10/1/24). The SPD is responsible for all indigent defense cases throughout the State of Idaho, including both juveniles and adults.

POSITION & RESPONSIBILITIES
The primary purpose of this position is to provide investigative support to the defending attorneys in an institutional office. The investigator works as part of the defense team to help meet the Office of the State Public Defender’s core goal – providing zealous holistic representation.
This is a non-classified position that reports to the Managing Attorney or their designee.
Example of Duties
+ Conducting interviews of all relevant witnesses and clients,
+ Appearing in court as needed,
+ Reviewing and analyzing discovery and other case documentation,
+ Gathering, requesting and reviewing documents and records,
+ Taking photographs and measurements,
+ Serving subpoenas,
+ Going into the field and engaging in face-to-face interactions with individuals to gather information and locate witnesses,
+ Develops leads and sources of information,
+ Conducts surveillance of both stationary and mobile subjects in a covert manner,
+ Providing comprehensive reports of interviews and investigation,
+ Preparing photographs, diagrams, maps and exhibits to facilitate improved understanding of a case,
+ Working evenings and weekends, as investigations require,
+ Entering and reviewing data in the Case Management System (CMS) according to CMS guidelines,
+ Tracking own time in the CMS,
+ Maintaining confidentiality of client information and adhering to ethical standards,
+ Attend case planning and strategy meetings,
+ Working both in an outside the office,
+ Regular travel throughout the judicial district,
+ Occasional travel outside the judicial district, and
+ Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
· Four years of broad criminal investigative experience.
· Possession of a valid Driver’s License and access to a motor vehicle to perform essential job-related functions.
Preferred Qualifications
+ Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Psychology, Sociology, Criminal Justice, or closely related field; or
+ Completion of an associate degree from an accredited college in Psychology, Sociology, Criminal Justice, or a closely related field, and two years of criminal investigative experience.
