The job of Interpreter/Translator is done for the purpose/s of providing support to District programs and policies in translating a variety of documents and interpreting for functions and meetings; documents to/from target language primarily in support of the special education program.
This job reports to Assigned Administrator.
Representative Duties
Essential Functions
Composes routine correspondence from brief instructions for the purpose of providing written documentation.
Maintains a variety of electronic lists and records for the purpose of providing and up-to-date reference trail.
Maintains a variety of confidential and non-confidential manual and electronic lists and records for the purpose of providing an up-to-date reference trail.
Prepares a variety of documents, reports and written materials for the purpose of communicating information to parents, staff; providing written support, developing recommendations and/or conveying information.
Provides interpretation at IEP meetings or parent meetings, workshops, conferences, and other meetings as assigned for the purpose of ensuring Spanish speaking and non-Spanish speaking teachers, administrators, students, parents, and other pertinent parties understand the exchange of oral communication accurately and clearly.
Reads and rewrites material in Spanish for the purpose of providing materials in Spanish following established rules related to factors such as word meaning, sentence structure, grammar and punctuation.
Translates routine correspondence from brief instructions for the purpose of providing written documentation.
Translates accurately and concisely documents and other materials from English to Spanish and Spanish to English (e.g. IEP's, Behavioral Plans, Speech and Language assessments reports, Psycho Educational Assessment Reports, etc.) for the purpose of providing translation for school and District level functions as needed.
Marginal Functions
Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Initial/Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Graduation from High School or equivalent, supplemented by demonstrated bilingual/biliterate skills. Six (6) months experience translating materials from English to the designated second language. Any other combination of education, training, and experience, which demonstrates that the applicant is likely to possess the required skills, knowledge, or abilities, may be considered.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Working Conditions
SKILLS are required to perform single, technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet
changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: Special Education terms (legal, medical, educational); Special Education processes and programs; and protocol in confidential translation/interpretation.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; collate data; and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with data of varied types and/or purposes; and utilize job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is limited to moderate. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups; establishing and maintaining cooperative and effective working relationships with others; and maintaining confidentiality.
Responsibility
Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. There is some opportunity to affect the organization's services.
Work Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 80% sitting, 10% walking, and 10% standing. The job is performed in a generally hazard free environment.
