We are excited to announce a new opportunity for an Intermediate Mechanical Engineer to join our Integrated Design Team within the Energy & Resources (E&R) Business Operating Unit (BOU). This role is for a full-time secondment assignment at a major oil refinery in Edmonton, Alberta, offering a dynamic, hands-on environment to apply your mechanical engineering expertise in the energy sector.
The Integrated Design Team is a forward-thinking initiative designed to enhance project execution through global collaboration. Comprising engineers, designers, and technologists with transferable skills, the team supports projects across the E&R portfolio. By promoting cross-training, leveraging global design centers, and fostering seamless collaboration, we aim to deliver the right expertise to the right projects—maximizing agility, efficiency, and growth opportunities for our people.
Essential Functions:
+ Adhere to Stantec’s Environmental, Health & Safety (EH&S) program, with a strong emphasis on field safety practices.
+ Collaborate effectively as part of a multidisciplinary project team.
+ Interface and coordinate with inspection, planning, and execution project teams.
+ Field work for data gathering and field verifications.
+ Evaluate, select, and specify mechanical systems or components, ensuring technical accuracy and compliance with project requirements.
+ Contribute to design development through sketches, diagrams, and other visual tools.
+ Prepare and/or review, approve engineering calculations using company standard software and proprietary software tools.
+ Complete mechanical calculations for equipment sizing, material selection, etc.
+ Conducts quality assurance and quality control reviews to maintain high standards of engineering output.
+ Ensure all work aligns with Stantec’s quality control procedures and guidelines.
+ Participate in client, vendor, and/or contractor meetings, including HAZOP, 3D model reviews, constructability and design reviews.
+ Manage and deliver mechanical engineering deliverables on multiple projects in a dynamic work environment.
+ Build and maintain strong, positive client relationships.
+ Support the development of construction contracts and participate in the tendering, analysis, and award process.
+ Perform technical bid evaluations (TBEs) for equipment.
+ Prepare and/or review, approve mechanical equipment specifications, datasheets and procurement documentation.
+ Develop and/or review, approve mechanical drawings, including isometrics, general arrangement, detail drawings and P&IDs.
+ Prepare and/or review, approve Construction Work Packages (CWPs).
+ Develop and/or review, approve tie-in lists and line lists.
+ Stamp engineering calculations, drawings, and documents as required.
+ Ensure the use of appropriate reference materials and standards throughout all project phases.
Capabilities:
+ Strong understanding of industry standards and applicable codes, including ASME, CSA, API, ANSI, NACE.
+ Strong understanding of mechanical systems, construction methods, and material specifications.
+ Ability to manage time effectively and meet project deadlines.
+ Capable of providing clear and concise project status updates to stakeholders.
+ Solid grasp of mechanical engineering principles and the ability to effectively communicate complex technical concepts.
+ Integrates continuous improvement concepts and techniques into all aspects of the job.
+ Experience supporting projects through all phases—from concept development to construction execution.
+ Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a track record of producing high-quality technical documentation.
+ Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a dynamic work environment.
+ Comprehensive understanding of key project deliverables, including Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), isometrics, and general arrangement drawings.
+ Detailed understanding of a wide range of process equipment used in the energy sector, such as pressure vessels, tanks, heat exchangers & coolers, heaters, rotating equipment (pumps and compressors), packaged equipment, valves & specialty items.
+ Knowledge of material selection criteria for process piping and equipment design.
+ Understanding of fabrication and construction techniques and processes.
+ Strong work ethic and willingness to go above and beyond to support project teams and client needs.
+ Proficiency in standard software tools, including Microsoft Office Suite.
+ Knowledge and ability to use AutoCAD is an asset.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have:
+ Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university. At least 5 years of mechanical engineering work experience related to E&R projects. Proven technical leader within the discipline of Mechanical Engineering.
+ Professional Engineering designation in Alberta or eligible to register for it
+ Field/site engineering experience is an asset
+ Excellent verbal and written communication skills
+ Available for travel within Canada for short durations 2-5 days (as required)
**Pay Transparency:** In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible.
