**Interim Controller**
**Location:** Downtown Chicago | 3 days on-site, Wednesday required
**Pay Range:** $60–$75/hour
**Start:** ASAP
Our client, a well-established **nonprofit organization** , is seeking an **Interim Controller** to provide hands-on leadership and stability within the Finance Department during a period of transition. This role will oversee core accounting operations, ensure accurate financial reporting, and serve as a key partner to senior leadership.
The ideal candidate is a seasoned nonprofit finance professional who can quickly step in, take ownership of day-to-day accounting activities, support audit readiness, and guide a developing accounting team through process improvements and system adoption.
**What’s the Job?**
1. Lead and oversee all accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and cash management, ensuring compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards
2. Own and execute the month-end close process, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and timely preparation of monthly financial statements
3. Prepare, review, and analyze financial reports, budget-to-actual variances, and key metrics for senior leadership
4. Partner with leadership on audit coordination, grant and contract financial reporting, and internal control compliance
5. Supervise and mentor accounting staff, providing oversight, guidance, and hands-on support while driving process improvements and system optimization (Sage Intacct)
**What’s Needed?**
1. Extensive nonprofit accounting experience, including fund accounting, restricted assets, grants, contributions, and Form 990 support
2. Strong technical accounting background with the ability to review work, identify issues, and ensure accurate financial reporting
3. Proven leadership experience managing and supporting accounting teams during periods of transition or change
4. Experience with **Sage Intacct** or a comparable accounting system, including chart of accounts and reporting structures
5. Ability to operate independently, prioritize effectively, and bring a calm, solutions-oriented approach in a dynamic environment
