Support the Air Force Laboratory (AFRL) Sensor’s Directorate Electro Optics (EO)/Infrared (IR) Technologies branch to help advance R&D efforts in the field of EO/IR.
Key Responsibilities:
The Integrated Photonics Scientist will be responsible for developing, integrating, and testing photonic devices and sub-systems to help advance state-of-the-art sensors. The candidate is expected to work collaboratively across interdisciplinary teams to guide the transfer of proof-of-concept devices for insertion into photonic sub-systems. Research may span across multiple material platforms and integration approaches. Various aspects of research may include the development of photonic devices to support RF and microwave photonic applications and PNT applications. Specific job responsibilities include:
• Perform modeling of passive and active photonics components and sub-systems
• Perform research optimizing device design to address key performance parameters
• Layout device and circuit design within CAD environment, including Synopsys, KLayout and/or Python, for fabrication within laboratory cleanrooms and foundry-level MPW processes
• Perform characterization of photonics devices
• Work closely with a team of engineers and scientists to develop photonic devices for insertion into larger photonic/electronic sub-systems.
• Design, setup, and automate experiments for device characterization
• Document and present results and analysis across different platforms including internal reviews, journal publications, and conferences.

Required Qualifications:
• Bachelors degree in Engineering or Physics, with a solid background in optical physics and integrated photonics.
• 2 years of research experience in a laboratory environment
• Experience operating Hall-Effect systems
• Proficient in opto-electronic device and sub-system modeling, simulation, and experimentation
• Demonstrated experience experimentally characterizing photonic devices and sub-systems
• Experience leveraging and automating photonic integrated device probe stations
• Experience using optical test equipment: tunable lasers, photodetectors, spectrum analyzers, optical amplifiers
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Self-motivated, with strong analytical and problem-solving skills
• Experience using RF test equipment: spectrum analyzers, signal generators, power meters
• Familiarity with photonic integrated circuit design software: KLayout, Synopsys, etc.
• Able to work in a team setting
Desired Qualifications:
• PhD in Engineering or Physics, with a solid background in optical physics and integrated photonics.
• 25+ years of research experience in a laboratory environment
