The Inpatient Behavioral Health Therapist provides therapeutic services to patients admitted to the behavioral health unit. This role is responsible for conducting intake assessments, developing treatment plans, facilitating individual, group, and family therapy, and collaborating with an interdisciplinary team to support patients in achieving stabilization and recovery. The therapist works closely with the Acute Care Section Chief to ensure delivery of high-quality patient care and to develop and enhance unit programming. Care is provided in a trauma-informed, patient-centered, and culturally sensitive manner while maintaining compliance with all regulatory and organizational standards. The inpatient behavioral health setting is a fast-paced environment with exposure to patients in crisis and requires adaptability, flexibility, and the ability to remain calm under pressure. The Inpatient Behavioral Health Therapist reports to the Assistant Vice President of Behavioral Health and works closely with the Behavioral Health Chief of Medicine. 

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Functions autonomously in providing therapy services to clients with a variety of acute and chronic mental health conditions.Provides evidence-based individual, group, and family therapy sessions.Develops individualized treatment plans in collaboration with patients, families, and the care team. Provides crisis intervention and support for patients experiencing acute psychiatric symptoms. Works collaboratively with psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, and other inter-disciplinary team members to coordinate care.Conducts intake assessments as assigned.Provides clinical consultation and educational programs to BMC staff and/or community agency program personnel as needed.Maintains involvement with in-service training experiences.Maintains current documentation of all clinical services provided in accordance with department, organizational, and accreditation standards.Participates in daily treatment team meetings and case conferencesContributes to quality improvement initiatives and upholds standards of professional and ethical practice.Provides reasonable clinical oversight to other staff as needed.Maintains current Iowa Social Work/LMHC/LMFT License.Performs other duties as assigned.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

Maintain individual productivity at a quantity consistent with departmental productivity standards.Select appropriate diagnosis/diagnoses on all documentation.Documentation for client sessions is completed in a timely manner; generally, within 24 hours of session.Seek opportunities to expand professional practice and maintain competence in current treatment options.Ensure professional licensure is maintained and in good standing.Demonstrate flexibility to adapt to changes in workload, schedule, department functions and procedures.Work collaboratively with clients, care team, and families in formulating goals for treatment.Assist with decreasing client utilization of inpatient psychiatric services as able through adjustment of session frequency, making appropriate referrals, and notifying others on the care team when necessary. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or related behavioral health field from an accredited educational institution.Current LMSW, LISW, t-LMHC, t-LMFT license with the State of Iowa. Strong clinical assessment and therapeutic skills.Ability to work effectively with patients experiencing severe and persistent mental illness. Knowledge in crisis intervention techniques and brief therapy.Ability to work cooperatively with a multi-disciplinary team.Clinical experience in evaluation/assessment and multi-axial diagnoses of adults in various stages of the developmental cycle.Excellent communication, collaboration, and documentation skills.Reasonably able to de-escalate a client utilizing BMC-trained philosophies.Knowledge of trauma-informed care, evidence-based practices, and crisis de-escalation techniques.
