Innovation Accelerator Data Science Lead

This role is based in the Innovation Accelerator (IA) team, the innovation engine and connective tissue for Design, Data and Data Science innovation strategy within Product Development Data Sciences (PDD). We translate our long-term PDD vision into actionable strategy, shaping and prioritizing innovative cross-functional use cases that span PDD, PD, and Pharma. As both integrators and incubators, we explore, prototype, and help productize solutions to deliver impact in close partnership with internal Roche teams and external collaborators. With a mindset rooted in openness, value creation, and adaptability, we navigate the innovation ecosystem to drive transformative impact and future readiness across the organization.

The Opportunity:

The Innovation Accelerator Data Science Lead is responsible for developing and scaling high-performing technical teams across data science, software engineering, and solution development within IA. This role blends hands-on people leadership with delivery oversight, ensuring that the function’s technical capacity aligns with strategic goals and project demands. Positioned directly below the Head of IA Data Science, the Data Science Lead plays a critical role in capability building, performance coaching, and operational execution to support the delivery of impactful, innovative solutions across PDD.

You collaborate with the IA Data Science Head and function leadership to operationalize the innovation roadmap and scale high-impact solutions

You translate innovation priorities into team-level resourcing, planning, and development strategies

You support delivery teams across the solution lifecycle, from early-stage prototyping through productization and integration

You oversee consistent implementation of best practices in data science, software engineering, and solution delivery within assigned teams

You drive continuous improvement of internal processes to increase team efficiency, quality, and cross-functional alignment

You partner with program and product leads to ensure appropriate technical staffing, risk management, and delivery velocity

You serve as escalation point for delivery issues and coordinate technical resolution in collaboration with the Technical Lead

You ensure high standards for documentation, reproducibility, and compliance across teams

You lead a team of technical specialists (e.g., data scientists, engineers) across multiple workstreams and capability areas

You manage workforce planning, hiring, onboarding, and succession planning in alignment with Innovation Initiatives strategic priorities

You set team goals and development plans, guide performance reviews, and support career progression

You cultivate a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performing team culture with a focus on learning, ownership, and delivery excellence

You mentor team members in technical depth, stakeholder engagement, and personal development

You support team members in navigating cross-functional collaboration, technical challenges, and system-level integration

You represent the team in forums with senior stakeholders and ensure alignment to department-wide priorities and operating models

You collaborate with other leaders to ensure consistency, resourcing transparency, and shared team development practices

Who you are:

You have an advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Engineering, Biomedical Informatics, or a related field

You have 12+ years of experience in project, study, or technical solution delivery across data science, software engineering, or digital product development

You have 3+ years of experience in people leadership, including managing technical teams in matrixed or agile environments

You have a proven track record of building, mentoring, and scaling high-performing technical teams

You have strong operational and organizational skills, including capacity planning and delivery tracking

You are familiar with innovation processes and prototyping-to-productization pipelines

You have demonstrated ability to align team execution with strategic and cross-functional goals

You have excellent communication, collaboration, and influencing skills across technical and non-technical audiences

You have knowledge of and experience with four or more of the following:

Epidemiology, including causal inference methods for observational real world data (RWD) or real world evidence (RWE)

Bayesian statistics

Decision theory, including multiple criteria decision analysis (MCDA), utility elicitation, decision simulation models, or Value of Information

Clinical outcomes research using data from electronic health records (EHR)

Discovery mechanisms and evidence generation pathways for novel biomarkers and risk scores

Interpretable machine learning

Methods to incorporate knowledge graphs, ontologies, or other forms of structured information

Probabilistic programming languages

Complex or innovative clinical trial designs, including adaptive stopping, seamless Phase 2/Phase 3 designs

You have capacity for independent thinking and ability to make decisions based upon sound principles

You exhibit excellent strategic agility including problem-solving and critical thinking skills, and agility that extends beyond technical domain

You demonstrate respect for cultural differences when interacting with colleagues in the global workplace

You possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, specifically in the areas of presentation and writing, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts in clear language

Preferred:

Experience in regulated environments such as pharma, healthtech, or life sciences R&D

Familiarity with cloud platforms, agile tooling, and collaborative development workflows

Experience with AI/ML or data science enablement in clinical, scientific, or operational domains

Knowledge of compliance-driven software development frameworks (e.g., QMS for SaMD, GxP)

Track record of enabling innovation in complex, matrixed organizational structures

Relocation benefits are not available for this posting  

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of Massachusetts is $195,800-$363,600. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.  A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance.  This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
