GENERAL FUNCTION

The Information Security organization is responsible for safeguarding the bank’s digital assets, customer data, and critical infrastructure against evolving cyber threats. These teams work collaboratively to embed security into all business processes and technologies and stand at the ready  to protect the bank against emerging threats. By defining and maintaining a strong security posture, the Information Security organization plays a critical role in advancing Fifth Third’s mission to be the One Bank people most value and trust.

The Information Security Co-Op will directly support this mission by contributing to the placement team’s active security projects and initiatives. Actual deliverables and responsibilities will vary by team and are more clearly defined below.

Join Fifth Third Bank’s Application Security team, a key part of our Enterprise Vulnerability Management (EVM) Program. Our program supports Information Security’s mission to revolutionize bank security and build trust in a digital world—and we’re looking for curious, driven individuals to help us do just that.

In this role, you’ll work alongside experienced security engineers to identify and prioritize application vulnerabilities, build strong partnerships with development teams, and contribute to improving the Bank’s overall risk posture. In short, you’ll help break things to make them stronger.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Support new and ongoing security projectsPerform assignments and projects as determined by leadershipAdapt to feedback and work in a dynamic, team-oriented environmentBuild a network of contacts across teams and lines of businessConsistently adhere to bank policy and security best practicesCommunicate clearly and professionally, both verbally and in writingDemonstrate initiative, curiosity, and a willingness to learnManage time effectively and meet deadlinesPerform other duties as assigned

You may be involved in a variety of impactful projects, such as:

Penetration Testing – Paired with mentors and independently, ethically hack our business applications and uncover vulnerabilitiesVulnerability Disclosure and Bug Bounty programs – Help manage submissions from external researchers and learn how we respond to real threatsCode Analysis – Investigate false positive vulnerabilities flagged by industry tools and sharpen your detective skillsDevelopment Team Collaboration – Work directly with developers to understand and remediate vulnerabilities

MINIMUM REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

Must be authorized to work in the U.S. without the need for employment-based immigration sponsorship now or in the future.Current enrollment in accredited undergraduate degree program studying Cybersecurity, Computer Science, or similar relevant fieldStrong academic record with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.Self-discipline and time management skills, especially in a virtual work settingWillingness and ability to learn new tools, technologies, and conceptsBasic understanding of core information security principlesStrong understanding of web application technologies (Backend, APIs, Frontend)Experience with a scripting language (e.g., Python)Curiosity and a passion for making tech safer

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

Relevant internship and/or co-op experienceComfortable working in the command lineFamiliarity with tools like nmap, netstat, BurpSuite, WiresharkExposure to container technologies like Docker
