Background/Context:  

The IRC has operated in Syria since 2012, providing protection, health, economic recovery, and early childhood development programs in Idleb, Aleppo, Ar-Raqqa, Hassakeh, and Deir ez-Zor, with new programs expanding into Hama, rural Damascus, and Homs. With a team of over 700 members, the IRC has established trust and strong community relationships, ensuring access and effective service delivery. It plays a significant role in Syria’s NGO, donor, and coordination forums, holding key positions and adapting to the evolving context.

With the new realities under the new government, as of December 2024, the IRC has deployed a team to Damascus to set up operations and engage in coordination structures for newly accessible areas across Syria—including parts of NES, NWS, and other previously unreachable locations in South and Central Syria, adjusting operations to maximize coverage and efficiency.

Healthcare

Since 2012, the IRC has provided comprehensive primary and secondary healthcare through hospitals, clinics, and mobile medical units (MMUs). Ensuring access to vital services like sexual and reproductive health, clinical psychosocial support, and other specialized care. Working alongside our partners, we’ve helped secure a steady supply of medicines and medical equipment into the country, trained healthcare providers, and deployed health personnel to maintain services in even the most challenging conditions.

Job overview:

The incinerator worker, under the supervision of both the senior health officer and the senior infection prevention and control officer, will ensure the safe and proper disposal of medical waste at the medical center. He will also be responsible for maintaining the quality of the equipment and tools used, cleaning the site regularly, and ensuring that data is completed when using the medical incinerator. The operator will directly supervise the medical waste treatment site, arrange tools, and clean pits periodically, in accordance with supervisors' instructions.

 

Responsibilities:

All activities related to medical waste management within the healthcare facility, including sorting, collecting, transporting, and treating medical waste, are carried out in accordance with infection control standards set by the organization, in coordination between the infection control officer and the facility administrator, as follows:

 

Collect bags and containers of hazardous and non-hazardous healthcare waste using designated carts. Transport the bags and containers inside and outside the healthcare facility in a manner that prevents leaks or spills from the bags and containers.Follow up on the daily washing and disinfection of medical and non-medical waste containers and baskets in a designated location.Operate the medical waste treatment area (incinerator, mini-scale, crusher, landfill, waste collection area) according to the agreed-upon medical waste treatment program.Monitor maintenance work, deficiencies, and operational requirements related to the medical waste treatment area to ensure efficient and consistent operation.Adhere to all medical waste management measures specified by the organization's infection control program.Adhere to the provided protective clothing and ensure it is worn throughout all stages of waste collection and disposal, and adhere to the procedures directed by the supervisor.Daily documentation of medical waste receipt, collection and treatment operations, such as quantities and data on waste disposal, storage and transportation, and filling out the records specified for this purpose. Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

Preferably has high school diploma.Proficient reading and writing skills.

Work Experience:

At least one year of previous experience in a similar position.A good understanding of the community served (Raqqa - Jadida), community cohesion, and good communication skills.Previous experience in medical waste management, maintenance, and safety and prevention measures is preferable.Undergo training in medical waste management and infection prevention.
