Hy-Vee Construction Job Title : Estimator I I Department: Hy-Vee Construction FLSA: Exempt General Function This position is distinct in that Hy‑Vee Construction functions as an internal construction services department, delivering all project planning, preconstruction, and construction execution exclusively for Hy‑Vee. In this estimator role, you will operate on the Owner’s side, representing Hy‑Vee’s interests in the development of detailed cost estimates, budgeting, and procurement strategies. You will be responsible for preparing conceptual, schematic, and GMP‑level estimates; performing quantity takeoffs; evaluating scopes of work; and soliciting, analyzing, and awarding trade partner as well as general contractor proposals. Your work will directly inform capital planning, risk assessment, and project delivery decisions, while driving schedule and cost efficiencies across the organization’s construction portfolio. Core Competencies + Customer Satisfaction + Quality + Act With Urgency Reporting Relations Reports to : Lead Estimato r Positions that Report to you: None Primary Duties and Responsibilities: + Develops detailed quantity takeoffs, pricing, and cost analyses for labor, materials, equipment, contractors, and general conditions. + Reviews drawings, specifications, and scopes of work to identify risks, assumptions, and potential cost impacts. + Evaluates contractor and vendor bids to ensure pricing accuracy, scope alignment, and value. + Prepares and presents estimates, budgets, and cost updates to internal stakeholders and leadership as needed. + Assists with value engineering, cost saving alternatives, and budget optimization to support project financial goals. + Supports feasibility studies, preliminary budgets, and historical cost tracking to improve estimating accuracy over time. Education and Experience: + High School degree is required . An industry related college degree is pref erred. Two years of estimating responsibility are required for this position. Experience with formal presentations Physical Requirements: + Occasional standing, walking, or light lifting of plans may be required. Working Conditions: + Most work is done in an office, using a computer throughout the day for estimating, spreadsheets, and plan review. Office is setup as an open collaborative space. + The role involves extended sitting and regular keyboard, mouse, and screen time. + Estimators regularly collaborate with project managers, designers, vendors, and other team members, both in person and virtually. + Work typically follows normal business hours, with extra time as needed to meet bid deadlines. + Limited travel to job sites or meetings may be required. Financial Responsibility: + Responsible for preparing accurate and complete cost estimates that directly impact project budgets, profitability, and overall financial performance. + Reviews drawings, specifications, and scopes of work to identify financial risks, assumptions, and potential cost or schedule impacts. Confidentiality: + Maintains strict confidentiality of all project location, estimating, pricing, and financial information. + Protects sensitive bid data, contractor pricing, and vendor proposals, ensuring information is shared only with authorized parties. + Follows company policies related to data security, document control, and confidentiality throughout the bid process.
