Job Title: Housing Specialist
Job Summary:
CASES is currently seeking a Housing Specialist to join its Harlem Community Office – Supervised Release Program within Pretrial Services Team. The Housing Specialist is a professional who engages with clients in the community to provide support for their housing needs. This role involves collaborating with shelters or existing housing providers, facilitating the submission of housing applications, assessing clients’ readiness for housing, and advocating for the appropriate level of housing and support within their living environments. The Housing Specialist plays a crucial role in guiding clients through the complexities of housing processes and promoting independent living skills within the community. This role will be an active partner in providing direct services to participants primarily in the community with additional services being provided at other CASES program locations. This role is primarily based in the Harlem Community Office. The ideal candidate will demonstrate cultural competency, a commitment to anti-racist practices, and the ability to engage participants with high needs effectively within the community. Strong organizational abilities and the capacity to work independently in community settings are also essential for success in this role.
CASES’ Supervised Release Program (SRP) annually diverts 7,500 people otherwise facing pretrial detention at Rikers Island to community-based supervision and support services. Program participants include youth and young adults, people with substance use disorders and mental illnesses, and individuals who are homeless. SRP participants have not been found guilty of a crime and are not mandated to engage in treatment or other services. This requires staff to tactfully deliver approaches to help participants tap into their intrinsic motivation to leverage their strengths and skills for meaningful improvements in life while fulfilling all court requirements.
Shift Hours: This position is full-time Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
Salary: The salary for this role is $58,350 per year.
Location Address: 4 West 125th Street, New York, NY 10027. Our office is easily accessible by public transportation.
Workplace Flexibility: Hybrid – Staff may work remotely one day per week after successfully demonstrating an understanding of their job responsibilities following the first 30 days of onboarding.
What You Will Be Doing:
Create and sustain a database of housing resources and programs to furnish participants with relevant information.Assess participant’s housing requirements and formulate a personalized plan to secure safe and affordable housing. Evaluate participants’ eligibility for government-financed housing programs, including subsidies and benefit programs. Aid participants in searching for available properties or beds in facilities. Offer personalized advocacy and support to participants in housing programs. Conduct community outreach to discover housing opportunities. Develop partnerships with housing agencies, shelters, and housing programs to establish a dependable referral process. Address inquiries regarding housing application statuses and take necessary actions to achieve resolution for all housing-related matters. Assist in completing supportive housing applications in the Coordinated Assessment Placement System (CAPS). Collaborate with pertinent parties (i.e., contracted provider agency staff, FCLS, advocates) to suggest and/or work towards resolving housing issues. Appropriately and punctually document all direct service activities into the ECM/Salesforce database. Engage in individual and group supervision to case conference high-risk participants and complex cases to provide best quality of care and services to participants.Any other duties as required by the Director and/or Direct Supervisor.
What We Are Looking For:
High School Diploma.3+ years of experience in a prior housing related role. Experience working with populations who experience substance use, mental health, complex trauma, and/or justice-system involvement. Extensive knowledge of community treatment, support services and resources tailored towards criminal justice impacted individuals.Knowledge of the criminal legal system, court processes and alternative to detention/incarceration services.Preferred Skills:
Associate or bachelor's degree.Conflict management and de-escalation skills.Fluency in Spanish.
