Housing Specialist
Description We are looking for a meticulous Housing Specialist to join our team on a contract basis in Berkeley, California. In this role, you will assist clients with housing applications, assess eligibility for programs, and ensure compliance with relevant regulations. This position offers an opportunity to provide critical support to individuals and families seeking housing assistance while maintaining high standards of confidentiality and customer service. Responsibilities: • Conduct interviews with clients to gather necessary information for housing applications and declarations. • Verify applicant details by collecting data from previous landlords, social service departments, and other relevant agencies. • Evaluate applicant eligibility using established criteria and make informed decisions on program qualifications. • Maintain comprehensive client records, oversee annual reexaminations, interim updates, terminations, and portability processes. • Calculate housing allowances to determine rent levels and assess the continuation or modification of assistance programs. • Issue housing vouchers, lead briefings for unit transfers, and guide clients through the moving process. • Ensure accurate data entry to support reporting, lease creation, contract documentation, and compliance notices. • Facilitate meetings with applicants, landlords, and staff, mediating disputes in alignment with housing regulations. • Provide excellent customer service by addressing inquiries regarding housing programs via phone, email, and in-person communication. • Prepare and manage required documents and correspondence for compliance with federal, state, and county regulations. Requirements • Proficiency in conducting interviews and gathering financial and personal data. • Strong understanding of rental property management procedures and challenges. • Familiarity with tenant eligibility requirements and recertification processes. • Expertise in using computer applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint. • Knowledge of Section 8 housing programs and audit compliance standards. • Ability to interpret program regulations and communicate them effectively to diverse audiences. • Experience handling budget processes and documentation for housing programs. • Skill in operating office equipment and modern software to perform administrative tasks efficiently.
