Position Highlights:
Translational Pathology Research Honest Broker will serve as a firewall between patient data (including data on associated patient biospecimens) and requestors of patient data, essentially will help a clinical faculty member, a research pathologist of the Department of Pathology, seeking to use the data for conducting clinical research with the de-identified patient information. This role focuses on key competencies to ensure adherence to the Institutional Review Board (IRB), Health and Human Services (HHS), Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP), and HIPAA standards, guidelines, and policies. This spoke-level Honest Broker will be able to meet and discuss business requirements from faculty pathologists and translate these requirements into an executable data query. Database-centric responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, data mining, aggregation, wrangling, and trend analysis; however, the incumbent is also expected to analyze data using basic statistical methods to fulfill the specific requirements of the health research customer. The Honest Broker will possess functional knowledge of database query standards, reproducible programming, and essential statistical tools under best practices for working with protected health information under the clinical research environment.The Ideal Candidate:
Masters degree in related field and 3-7 years of direct data-mining experience focusing on oncology research, including patient data management. Experience using data query/reporting/visualization tools (R Markdown, Shiny, Connect, SQL, Python, SAS) or similar enterprise business intelligence applications (QlikView, Tableau, Power BI). Experience using electronic data capturing/workflow methodology software (REDCap) for designing clinical and translational research databases. Git-based version control experience. Use of cloud-based data workflows, particularly AWS or Snowflake. Basic to advanced knowledge of statistical and bioinformatic tools to analyze data based on the downstream research requirements.Responsibilities:
Spoke-Level Honest Broker (HB hereafter) will execute requests for aggregated, abstracted, limited, and designed PHI-masked datasets from internal and external sources. HB will adhere strictly to policies governing data containing PHI, aligning with federal policy, HIPAA regulations, Institutional Review Board (IRB), and Moffitt Cancer Center internal policies. HB will work to determine the scope of regulatory approvals required to authorize access to the type of data requested for the specified research purpose and verify that those approvals have been obtained before providing access to the requested data. Incumbent will be required to complete the comprehensive research-specific Honest Broker Training Program designed and administered by the CDSC. This spoke-level HB will report to the Department of Pathology administratively but is accountable to Collaborative Data Services Core (CDSC) for all honest broker activities in compliance with the institutional policy and certified adherence to all CDSC best practices and standard operating procedures for the honest broker activities. Database-centric responsibilities will include data mining, aggregation, wrangling, and trend analysis; however, the incumbent is also expected to analyze data using basic statistical methods to fulfill the specific requirements of the health research customer. A Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Public Health, Health Sciences, Health Informatics, Biostatistics, Bioinformatics, Epidemiology, Computer Science, or related field of study is required and at least three (3) years of directly related experience querying/tidying/summarizing research data in a hospital or healthcare environment. **In lieu of a bachelor’s degree, an additional 4 years of recent experience as a data analyst/abstractor for a total of seven (7) years of experience may be considered. Proficiency in data processing with SQL/R/Python or similar programming knowledge. Ability to collate/review data for submission monitoring for outliers, error processing, and validation. Data management knowledge for extensive data sets, including basic biostatistical knowledge for analyzing and representing an array of data. Proficiency with MS Office, basic web-design knowledge for markdown reports of data (HTML/CSS) or similar applications to present data. Effective time management skills with the capacity to handle multiple projects. Ability to identify barriers that may cause a change in deadlines or meeting requested proposals, particularly concerning data science workflows. Utilization of critical thinking skills in data management.
