A Histologist is proficient in and responsible for accessioning and processing all tissue, surgical specimens, foreign bodies, orthopedic devices, and other specimens removed during surgery. This close-knit team is known for their teamwork and collaboration. This team is driven and strives to provide quality patient results daily. A caregiver in this position works days from 7:30AM—4:00PM or 8:00AM—4:30PM.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
Process all cytology, biopsy, and aspirate specimens received from other patient care areas.
Perform immunocytochemical stains and assist the pathologist in processing tissue for immediate frozen sections.
Arrange for submission of various tissue and gynecological specimens, which include thin preps and prepared smears to reference laboratories.
Report pertinent information to the pathologist, patient care area, or supervisor (i.e. instrument malfunctions, delay in testing, reagent, or supply depletion.)
Maintain cleanliness of work areas and keep work areas organized and stocked.
Follow safety procedures and utilize all safety devices and personal protective equipment per protocol.
Follow procedures and refer to procedure manuals for proper instructions when needed.
Be proficient in operating instrumentation and equipment and follow trouble-shooting procedures to correct deficiencies or problems as they occur.
Ensure instrument operations and results are reliable and perform maintenance checks, startups, and/or shutdowns as assigned or as required.
Answer telephones, greet customers, and provide consults and technical support to the pathologists, physicians, and nursing staff.
Follow quality control policy and ensure controls are within acceptable limits before patient results are reported.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
Associate’s Degree or Certification from a NACCLS approved Histo-Technology Program OR a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical, Physical or Biological Science
Current license in the State of Florida at the histology or cytology technologist level
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
Bachelor’s Degree with Histotechnician (HT) or Histotechnologist (HTL) Certification through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)
American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) license
Two years of hospital experience
