The HIM Release of Information Lead role serves as a key quality and compliance leader within the Health Information Management team. With a strong focus on the integrity of the legal health record, this position partners closely with Epic IT staff to perform random audits and ensure accurate alignment between printed ROI reports and clinical content in Epic. Serving as the primary lead for high-risk, legal, and sensitive PHI requests, this individual ensures the timely, secure, and compliant release of patient information—supporting Valleywise Health’s legal, risk, and quality objectives. Through rigorous quality assurance reviews, regulatory compliance checks, and confidentiality best practices, this role helps safeguard patient privacy while facilitating informed decision-making. Additionally, the position plays an active role in quality improvement and cost-efficiency initiatives, ensuring all PHI access and disclosures align with HIPAA and other applicable laws, policies, and standards.

Hourly Pay Range: $23.08 - $34.04
Qualifications
Education:
Requires a High School Diploma or equivalent.
Working towards or completion of an Associate degree program is preferred.
Experience:
Must have a minimum of four (4) years of Health Information Management experience working with an Electronic Health Record system that demonstrates a strong understanding of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Electronic Health Record experience is required.
Prefer experience in providing classroom and/or on-site training.
Specialized Training:
Must successfully complete Valleywise Health provided training related to HIPAA and state and Federal regulations as it pertains to health records.
Epic/Quanum system training is preferred.
Certification/Licensure:
Requires current certification as a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Certified in Healthcare Privacy and Security (CHPS) through AHIMA or must be able to obtain within twenty-four 24 months of hire into position.
Current certification as a Certified Release of Information Specialist (CRIS) through AHIOS is preferred.
Current certification as a Certified Revenue Cycle is preferred.
Current Notary Public in the State of Arizona is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Must be able to perform all functions required of the HIM ROI Specialist I, HIM ROI Specialist II, and Health Record Content Analysis.
Requires the ability to work well independently in a fast-paced environment.
Must demonstrate the ability to learn within a short period of time.
Must demonstrate proficiency in HIM database systems, Electronic Health Record (EHR), and Electronic Document Management (EDM) systems.
Must demonstrate knowledge of HIPAA privacy and security regulations as evidenced by appropriately handling PHI, promoting confidentiality, and using discretion when handling patient information.
Must be proficient in Microsoft Office software (i.e., Word, Excel, and Outlook).
Must be able to categorize data in electronic and hard copy formats.
Must possess good interpersonal communication and strong customer service skills both verbally and in writing, including knowledge of basic grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
Requires the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
Requires excellent organizational and team-building skills.
Must be quality-conscious and customer-oriented.
Must be able to influence and adjust positively to change and follow through on all assignments.
Must be self-motivated and able to plan work activities and set effective priorities that are aligned with departmental and Valleywise Health operational and fiscal goals.
Requires knowledge in the use of a computer, fax machine, copier, and scanner.
Must have knowledge of health information management principles, state and federal laws, regulatory bodies, and techniques for managing and releasing protected health information.
Must have a solid knowledge of the Health Information Management department workflow process.
Must demonstrate working knowledge of all HIM database systems, Electronic Health Records (EHR), and Electronic Document Management (EDM) systems.
Requires strong knowledge of HIPAA regulations and DNV standards.
Must be approachable, people-oriented, and a good listener.
Must be able to communicate effectively and have excellent customer service skills.
