Summary This position, located in Nursing Service, at the VHA Salt Lake City Healthcare System. The primary purpose for the Health Technician is to deliver a broad array of services throughout the medical center, and its various locations that provide inpatient care. Responsibilities Duties include but are not limited to the following: Main duties for the Discharge Coordinator include: For all patients assigned to SLC VAMC's inpatient units with emphasis on physician workload reduction. Duties include expediting discharges through communication with necessary parties to include Nurse Physician Liaisons, Nurse Managers, Charge Nurses, patients and family members; updating electronic bed board; assessing patient discharge needs (home 02, equipment, transportation) coordinating discharge paperwork; assisting patients with dressing and gathering personal belongings for discharge; stripping patient rooms of equipment and used supplies, cleaning equipment after use. Other clinical duties include glucose testing, EKG's, and vital signs. Performs a range of diagnostic support duties such as taking, recording and reporting to supervisor deviations in vital signs, taking specimens, labeling specimens for the laboratory. Secures the confidence and cooperation of patients during procedures. Performs direct patient support work including personal patient care. MAJOR DUTIES Discharge Coordinator duties include: Receives requests or instructions for procedures. Interprets and coordinates for requests or instructions for medical or health care personnel. Receives assignments that require application of standard procedures or that require special procedures that are identified and explained. Employee understands and carries out the requests made by the health care professional or seeks assistance for uncommon, unique, or new procedures. Discharge Expediter expediting bed clearance and discharge time. Meet with the Nurse Physician Liaison's ( NPL's) and Nurse Manager on a daily basis or more often as needed. Update bed board regarding pending d/c's. Talk to patient about travel needs and when family can pick up. Relay last minute detail needs to NPL's, Nurse Manger and/or Charge Nurse. 02 needs if not set up, meds needing ordering (if patient has concerns), durable equipment needs (procure form prosthetics if needed), runner for last minute details (PT, OT assessments and the such), ensures that patient has appropriate clothing and ID for discharge. Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level. Qualifications To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 10/17/2025. There is an Individual Occupational Requirement for the GS-0640 series.Specialized Experience: Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. Or; Education and Training For GS-3: Successful completion of l year of study that included study in medical, health, or related fields. For GS-4: Successful completion of 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in subjects related to the position. For GS-5: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: GS-04 grade level: You must have 6 months of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-03 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Providing care to patients; maintaining cleanliness; use of assistive devices; providing transport/escort services . OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have 2 years above high school with courses related to the occupation. OR, Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have a combination of specialized experience and education beyond 1 year above high school with course(s) related to the occupation GS-05 grade level: In addition to meeting the basic requirements, you must also have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 level. Specialized experience includes, but is not limited to: Having knowledge of human anatomy. Possessing knowledge to recognize life threatening situations and acting to correct them. Assisting with patient exams and screening, Providing clerical administrative support coordination. Maintaining records/charts. Answering phones and directing phone calls to appropriate person/area. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation.
