Basic Qualifications 

Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university Minimum of 5 years of EHS progressive experience in a manufacturing environment Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States.  Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire.  Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Preferred Qualifications

Howmet Aerospace has an immediate opening for a Health and Safety (H&S) Leader at our Whitehall, Michigan location. Our passionate commitment to EHS provides the successful candidate with an excellent environment in which to work and the leadership commitment and support to deliver results.  This position is a key member of the EHS team and is a highly visible position in the operations and in the Engines Business Unit. 

In close cooperation with the location’s leadership team, this position will be accountable for driving environmental, health and safety efforts across the locations. Significant interface will be required with local management, Business Unit management and other internal and external stakeholders. 

Key Responsibilities of this position include:

Coach and counsel location leaders to assist them in the execution of their EHS accountabilities. Partner with location leadership to deliver EHS objectives. Develop and execute strategic and tactical EHS plans to drive fatality prevention, increase risk recognition and reduce injuries/incidents, improve employee health and environmental compliance and protection. Act as location representative to key internal and external stakeholders. Lead, mentor, develop and support the location’s professional EHS staff.

Job Responsibilities

Responsible for determining the strategic direction of all Environmental, Health and Safety programs for location. Sets EHS goals and helps set EHS priorities.  Provides direction on managing programs/policies and providing technical expertise for management of all EHS issues. 

Is jointly responsible with the Plant Manager for strategic direction in the deployment of environmental, safety, and health at the plant.  Is responsible for tactical direction in the deployment of environmental, safety, and health at the plant.  Is the environmental, safety, and health "eyes and ears" of the Plant Manager within the plant.  Develops and is a resource for development of programs designed to prevent injuries, illnesses and property loss.  Manages the administrative activities and management systems to ensure compliance with applicable corporate policies and state and federal regulations.  Is the environmental, safety, and health expertise for the plant and is responsible for keeping the Plant Manager informed of current and emerging issues in environmental, safety, and health.  Is responsible for allowing and encouraging resolution of environmental, safety, and health issues at the lowest level possible.  Is responsible for maintaining the statistics required to closely monitor the environmental, safety, and health of the plant employees.  Is responsible for an overall understanding of all Howmet environmental, safety, and health protocols and procedures.  Is expected to spend daily "floor time" in the plant to truly know the processes, employees and EHS hazards associated with the plant.  Under the sponsorship of the Plant Manager, will be accountable for coordination of an audit program to achieve good or better in all 4 critical protocols.  Provides critique and should be plant conscience at all levels, i.e. Plant Manager, Department Managers/Superintendents, Supervisors, crews and environmental, health, and safety committees. Although he/she will attempt to communicate at the appropriate level, he/she will elevate concerns to whatever level of the organization is required to ensure performance and compliance. This is a key success factor.  Shall be actively involved in ABS/standardized work design as a means to eliminate exposure to hazards.  Manages the Howmet Incident Management System: after consultation with medical and line management, makes the final decision about OSHA recordability of incidents.  Provides overall strategic direction of health and safety programs and practices for Howmet Whitehall. Ensures practices are aligned with Howmet’s health and safety standards. Manages expenses and develops budget to control costs while improving health and safety performance and determining risk analysis. Manages the Howmet Health and Safety Self-Assessment process to ensure compliance with all Howmet and applicable government regulations including documentation, reporting, permits, and training.  Provides technical support and direction for Howmet health, safety, and medical WWHP compliance practices. Interface with local, state, and federal agencies such as Mi-EGLE, EPA, and OSHA/MIOSHA,. Maintains permits and issue site reports as required by those agencies  Keeps current on OSHA, MIOSHA, and USEPA, DOT regulations through literature, seminars and training. Responsible for health and safety program communication.
