Health and Safety Intern
Job Summary: Health and Safety Intern/Co-op will gain hands-on experience in one of Smurfit WestRock’s manufacturing facility focusing in areas such as supporting the Health & Safety department by maintaining accurate safety records, improving PPE organization and availability, and assisting with ongoing safety initiatives. Throughout the assignments, there will be a heavy emphasis placed on safety, teamwork, and process improvement.
This position is a 8-month term: May – December.
Job Responsibilities:
Review and update the Safety Data sheets (SDS) database to ensure all documents are current and compliant.Organize SDS files digitally and ensure easy accessibility for employees.Assist with identifying missing or outdated SDS and coordinating updates.Conduct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) inventory counts.Assist with ordering PPE based on stock levels and employee needs.Organize PPE storage areas to ensure easy access and clear labeling.Support distribution of PPE to employees as required.File and organize health and safety records as required.Assist with converting paper records to digital format.Enter safety-related data into spreadsheets and databases.Assist with tracking safety metrics (inspections, incidents, training, PPE usage, etc.).Use Excel to organize, sort, and analyze basic safety data.Assist with planning, organizing, and preparing monthly safety activities and campaigns.Help develop posters, handouts, or digital communications.Support implementation of safety talks, awareness activities, or safety events.Perform other duties as required.Overtime may be needed.Work in a safe and efficient manner in accordance with company policies and procedures.Other duties as required.
What you need to succeed:
Must be 18 years oldEnrolled in post-secondary with a focus in Environmental Science, Health & Safety or a relevant course Possess strong Microsoft and computer skillsAble to collaborate with team membersPossess strong organization skills and able to complete project tasksHave strong attention to detail
