JOB SUMMARY:
Provide Overall direction and technical guidance for plant quality and food safety programs and for compliance with regulatory requirements. Reports directly to Quality Control Manager. Primary responsibility for direction of the workforce, to achieve all food safety and quality goals as set forth by facility management. This positon is responsibility for the supervision of Food Safety, Quality Control, and Lab personnel, and oversee food safety aspects of production.Expertise in development and management of HACCP, GMP, SOP, SSOP, AMS programs, Pre-operational Inspections, auditing Company policies/ procedures, monitoring and understanding of USDA government regulations pertaining to Food Safety/ HACCP, and facilitating 3rd Party plant audits.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Implement and maintain company policies with respect to product safety and quality, sanitation, HACCP, and related programs.Organize and coordinate the activities of the Food Safety/ Quality Control team to meet and exceed food safety goals, by organizing and correcting food safety issues, as well as implementation of quality and food safety programs.Understand and Manage the New Swine Inspection System (NSIS) on Harvest Floor. Must be a reliable liaison with USDA-FSIS in matters of regulatory compliance and regulatory programs.Manage and monitor the daily Pre-Operational (Harvest and Fabrication areas) inspections, working closely with the Sanitation team.Conduct investigations of plant Food Safety processes and ensure process improvements and tasks are completedWork closely with the Contract Services (Pest control, Chemical approvals, etc.) that are needed for Food SafetyAssist with customers and third parties to maintain the highest perception for the plant.Provide Laboratory guidance and assistance, for monitoring microbial testing programs and help to identify and validate effective microbiological interventions.Help manage and mentor the plant Food Safety team which will include plant hourly and management employeesKnowledge of Animal Welfare Handling program and policies, assisting when neededProactively looks for ways to reduce cost in QA Department, through the elimination of foreign material / claimsMonitor activities to ensure team member safety and accurately report any unsafe acts to prevent workplace safety incidents. Coordinate with site safety team for annual LOTO trainingCommunicates programs and procedures to QA and other plant team members by performing in-class and hands-on trainingMaintains good communication and working relationships with the QA team, site Operations team and USDA personnel. Ensuring that all USDA regulations are being followedMonitor activities to ensure team member safety and accurately report any unsafe acts to prevent workplace safety incidents. Coordinate with site safety team for annual LOTO trainingCommunicates programs and procedures to QA and other plant team members by performing in-class and hands-on
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work 40+ hours per week (Saturdays required when scheduled)
Desk and computer work, with frequent visits to all production areas
Possible exposure to slippery floors, extreme temperature variations, odd odors, loud noise, chemicals, sharp objects (knives), machinery, and vehicles.
REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION:
Prefer knowledge in animal science, food science, microbiology or related field. Advanced degree preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
Previous experience with Food Safety and HACCP principles (especially meat industry) and laboratory testing.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.Capable of independent decision-making. Skills in conflict resolutionAble to manage multiple priorities. Good organizational skillsDiverse Computer knowledge requiredSupervisory skills. Good interpersonal skills.Exemplary attendance and punctualityBilingual (plus, but not required)
