GX Global Operations Engineer

What you'll do Viasat's iDirect Global Operations team assure second line support to our GX/GX5 services that provide connectivity to various customer on Land, Maritime and Aero markets. These services are critical to revenue generation and must be treated as such to provide secure, resilient and timely connectivity to our customers. The systems are being expanded as new ground stations are opened, new systems implemented, new requirements formulated to integrate and expand capacity, and to meet current industry standards and best practises. The successful candidate will join a team of Global Express Engineers supporting all operational activities across the GX platforms and the services Inmarsat provides. In addition to general GX support the successful applicant will be required to create and enhance automation across the GX environment both system and process related and as such must be self-motivated and be capable of completing complex tasks with minimum supervision and have the confidence and ability to promote improvements to the operational environment In view of the dynamic context of GX, the sphere of activities and responsibilities of Global Express Engineer might change to reflect the evolution of Global Express as a capability. The day-to-day Support to GX Service Operations Follow up any issue raised by NOC Controllers that require further analysis and troubleshooting Troubleshoot complex customer cases Support with the creation and enhancement of automation across the GX system and process to both improve the quality of service we offer as well as to reduce manual, repetitive activities Ensure that all operational documentations are kept up to date and include RF, network and electrical schematics. Work with NOC Controllers to continually refresh skills and ensure most recent processes are understood and adopted Creation of tools and test scripts for enhance support capability by automating processes and procedures Create and adjust monitoring interfaces and OpsPortal dashboards where required (e.g. create new Igraph chart groups, dashboards, or update carrier parameters in PCE for carrier monitoring) Liaise with the Network Management System team by providing constant feedback on the status of INMS as well as suggesting ways to improve it as appropriate Work with the GX Engineering team to improve collaboration and knowledge transfer Develop and maintain suitable GX routine checks to ensure that all NOC tools are functional. These will include checks on RF Carrier levels Work with the GX site staff (Inmarsat or external) for routine operations such as verifying that periodic checks are done, and or one-off operations like replacement of failed components Present and implement changes in accordance with the Change Management practice Collect information from NOC Controllers to be used as input to various meetings Recommend and implement improvements positively affecting the quality of service for customers Interface with Platform Engineering Assist where required in deeper troubleshooting of any incidents/issues in support of fourth line engineering Communicate effectively the steps taken prior to the elevation of a case or incident and ensure clear and concise information is presented Ensure that any modification to the GX system is properly coordinated and from review to roll out ensuring successful launch into commercial service Suggest enhancements to the GX system to improve operability Participate in testing activities with the objective of gaining system knowledge useful for operations Create and perform detailed test campaigns such as setup carrier monitoring, terminal logging and be able to present the findings What you'll need Degree in Electronic Engineering, Telecommunications, IT / Computing Science or equivalent qualification Experience in iDirect network environments is a key requirement Significant and proven relevant practical experience in satellite communication systems equipment, data communication and networking Knowledge and understanding of TCP/IP and the OSI 7 layer model along with QoS Linux and Unix command line experience and understanding Excellent communication skills in English Experience of customer liaison both via phone and via e-mail Flexible work attitude as will need to be available at times outside of normal working hours and will be required to travel Calm and methodical approach to resolving problems under pressure The nature of the job will require the following key qualities: High degree of proactiveness in defining and implementing solutions autonomously and virtually single-handedly but at the same time seeking feedback from other members of the team. Ability to consider and envision what will be needed in the GX support arena, to come up with some conceptual ideas and drive them to conclusion Capability to establish and maintain relationships with people in various teams within and outside the NetOps environment Capability to work under pressure to meet deadlines and deliver high quality outputs Flexibility to work outside of working hours to support special activities and/or critical operations at short notice Capable of operating as part of an on-call rota for out of hours support Flexibility to travel to Europe as well as USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand What will help you on the job Knowledge in VSAT Systems: Network / RF Modulation and Coding Programming ability (C++, Python &/or Java) Cisco CCNA certification An understanding of ITIL framework and methodologies Desire to continually update skills and knowledge EEO Statement Viasat is proud to be an equal opportunity employer, seeking to create a welcoming and diverse environment.
