Job Description / Essential Elements:    Print    BASIC FUNCTION: Under direction of the Director of Facilities, Development, and Transportation, perform a variety of unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled grounds maintenance duties on school grounds, tracks, athletic fields, and playing grounds in order to maintain grounds at all school sites and District facilities in a clean, neat and attractive condition. ESSENTIAL DUTIES: o Participate in mowing and grounds maintenance projects according to established schedules and special school and District activities; participate in grounds maintenance projects including installing and repairing fences and gates, maintaining parking lots, athletic fields and playgrounds, and assisting in maintaining sprinkler equipment and systems. o Perform unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled gardening work including planting, cultivating, pruning, fertilizing and irrigating flowers, trees, shrubs, hedges and lawns; edge walkways; remove weeds, trash and debris; sweep and clean grounds areas. o Operate hand and power tools and light grounds maintenance equipment including hedge trimmer, weed eater, chain saw, blower, mowers and other equipment; report equipment malfunctions according to established procedures. o Operate heavy grounds maintenance equipment including a tractor, cherry picker, sprayer, dump truck, hedge trimmer, weed eaters, chain saws, cement cutter, sweeper, blower, mowers, welding torch, fork lift, chipper and tamper; request repairs and parts for equipment according to established procedures. o Perform other varied grounds maintenance duties such as repairing potholes, striping parking lots and athletic fields, inspecting grounds for insect infestation and plant diseases, and spraying grounds as needed. o Maintain routine records related to work performed and materials used. o Assist in moving furniture and equipment for classroom set-ups and special events. o Perform related duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE OF: Methods, materials, tools and equipment used in grounds maintenance work including the maintenance of asphalt, concrete, fences and gates. Methods of planting, pruning, cultivating, fertilizing and caring for plants, flowers, shrubs, trees, hedges, lawns and athletic fields. Health and safety procedures and regulations related to grounds maintenance work. Operation and proper maintenance of light/heavy grounds maintenance equipment including tractor, dump truck, mowers, trimmers, edgers, fork lift, cherry picker and others. Plant and tree diseases and pests common to the area. Basic shop math used in grounds maintenance work. Basic record-keeping techniques. ABILITY TO: Participate in a variety of grounds maintenance projects. Operate and ensure proper care and maintenance of light and heavy grounds maintenance vehicles and equipment. Perform a variety of semi-skilled to skilled grounds maintenance work including care of lawns, landscaped areas, parking lots, athletic fields, fences, gates and concrete areas. Perform scheduled grounds maintenance activities and assignments. Meet schedules and time lines. Observe health and safety regulations and procedures. Maintain routine records related to work completed and materials used. Perform basic math related to grounds maintenance work. Work independently and as a member of a crew. Observe legal and defensive driving practices. Communicate and work cooperatively with others. LICENSES AND OTHER CERTIFICATIONS: Valid California driver's license. Some positions in this class may require a valid California commercial driver’s license prior to appointment. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and two years of grounds maintenance experience including the operation of power equipment, and the care of lawns and landscaped areas. WORKING CONDITIONS: ENVIRONMENT: Outdoor work environment; subject to seasonal heat and cold and adverse weather conditions; noise from equipment operation; and regular exposure to exhaust fumes, dust, odors and fertilizer. PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Stand and walk for extended periods of time over rough or uneven surfaces; bend at the waist; climb; kneel; lift, carry or move heavy material and equipment weighing up to 75 pounds; dig; perform heavy physical labor; manipulate hands and fingers to operate grounds maintenance hand and power tools and equipment.
