Graphics Intensive

The Graphics Intensive is a unique opportunity for mission-driven students and early career professionals with visual skills to work alongside journalists for a 12-week, full-time program. We seek individuals who bring their own inquisitive nature to develop creative approaches to storytelling, including those who may not have previously considered working in an independent newsroom. Prior journalism experience isn’t required — many of our team members have embraced journalism’s core fundamentals while at The Times — but you must have a desire to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

The Graphics desk at The New York Times is composed of journalists and visual thinkers from diverse creative backgrounds, including architecture, cartography, and computer science. We cover all topics across the news cycle, motivated by a shared curiosity. This position is designed to cultivate skills and judgment in the creation of visual stories, including training and regular feedback from team members. Many of our projects are a collective effort, so you will work with a range of people and skill sets.

We are interested in applicants who want to learn how to apply creative and technical skills to a range of journalistic and storytelling assignments. Do you know how to write code to analyze data and produce visualizations? Are you a mapmaker or satellite imagery analyst? Do you use design and illustration to clearly convey complex information? These are the types of people that we seek to develop as potential graphics journalists.

What you will do:

Under close guidance and supervision of a more senior Editor, produce visual and data-based multimedia journalism in response to breaking or as ongoing news coverage

With guidance from an more senior Editor, Design and build graphics and other visual forms using web-based markup and coding languages

Participate in training sessions

Collaborate with colleagues across the newsroom

Complete work assignments based on team needs and news demands

You must understand and support our value of journalistic independence and have a strong commitment to our newsroom’s mission.

This is an in-office position, based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance.

Applications should include links to a portfolio or work samples to demonstrate your skills and experience. Please attach a cover letter describing your role in specific projects and which periods of time you will be available for the Graphics intensive.
