Graduate Student - DoIM Education Program
MD Anderson Cancer Center
A graduate student position is available in the DoIM Education Program. The trainee will contribute to a research project focused on patient-centered outcomes, with responsibilities including assisting with research data collection and analysis, literature review, and physician shadowing.
All duties and responsibilities are carried out in compliance with institutional policies, ethical research standards, and applicable federal and state regulations.
*LEARNING OBJECTIVES*
Primary Objectives:
To compare clinical and cost of care outcomes between Hospital Medicine (HM) and non-HM providers for hospitalized solid tumor patients, focusing on key metrics such as length of stay (LOS), ICU admissions, in-hospital mortality, early ICU deaths, 30-day readmissions, discharge disposition, and direct costs.
Secondary Objectives:
To demonstrate the value of the hospitalist care model in an oncology setting and identify areas for care optimization to inform resource allocation and quality improvement initiatives."
Study Design - Retrospective study:
Study Population - All adult patients with cancer admitted to MD Anderson Cancer Center during the study period (August 2023 - August 2024)
Inclusion Criteria:
- Adults (=18 years) with a diagnosis of solid tumor cancer.
- Hospitalized at MD Anderson Cancer Center during the study period for reasons related to their cancer diagnosis.
Exclusion Criteria:
- Patients with an active hospice care plan or enrolled in end-of-life care at the time of admission.
- Patients not expected to survive the hospitalization (e.g., terminal cases).
*ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS*
- Applied experience conducting descriptive, comparative, and multivariable statistical analyses in a real-world clinical research setting.
- Hands-on exposure to working with EHR data, including data extraction, cleaning and interpretation.
- Practical understanding of observational study design and methods for addressing confounding in clinical research
- Improved skills in literature review and synthesis of evidence to support research questions.
- Insight into patient-centered outcomes research and healthcare quality metrics.
- Opportunities to observe interdisciplinary collaboration within hospital medicine and clinical research teams.
- Enhanced scientific communication skills through regular meetings, discussions, and possible contributions to presentations or manuscripts
- Professional development in time management, research ethics, and working in a clinical academic environment.
- Ability to work with electronic health record (EHR) data under supervision.
- Understanding of research methodology and principles of observational study design
- Interest in patient-centered outcomes research
- Strong analytical thinking and attention to data quality
- Basic knowledge in statistical programming
- Foundational knowledge of biostatistics and data science, including descriptive and comparative statistical methods
- Willingness to learn and collaborate within a multidisciplinary clinical research team
- Professional communication and time management skills appropriate for a research trainee role
