Govt. Insurance - Safety Officer

POSITION SUMMARY:

 

The Safety Officer, under the direction of the Risk Management Director, is responsible for ensuring compliance with a comprehensive safety, health, and occupational program throughout the entire organization. The position is responsible for increasing health and safety awareness at all levels within the organization.

                                                                                   

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)

 

Conducts building inspections; completes written audit reports. Ensures compliance OSHA, NFPA, ADA, and other applicable safety regulations. Conducts building inspections and completes written audit reports and assists in ensuring compliance with OSHA, NFPA, ADA, and other applicable Federal, State or Tribal safety regulations. Completes informal and written audit reports on other safety related concerns as requested by management; i.e. kitchen and food safety, chemical waste management, construction hazards, confined space entry and building accessibility. Identifies training needs and performs safety training, both routine and specialized, for team members throughout the 7-county service area. Facilitates comprehensive Safety Program. Identifies and tests work areas for potential accident and health hazards. Inspects and tests machinery and equipment to ensure they meet safety regulations. Performs Job Hazard Analysis. Conducts accident investigations and identifies unsafe work conditions. Recommends safety improvements and monitors identified areas to ensure correction of issues. Ensures team members are utilizing proper personal protection equipment (PPE).                                                                         

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)

 

Assists facilities within the 7-county service area and, where tribal team members are located, with developing and maintaining emergency procedures. All other job-related duties as assigned.

Immediate peers, peers in other departments, immediate supervisor/manager, managers in other departments, executives and outside vendors/service providers.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

Position light with lifting of 20 pounds and frequent lifting/carrying up to 10 pounds. Physical factors include constant use of hearing, smell, near/midrange/far vision, depth perception, color/field of vision; frequent standing, walking, climbing, driving, typing; occasional sitting, stooping, kneeling and reaching and bending. Working conditions include occasional exposure to weather, extreme heat/cold, wet/humidity, noise, vibration and air quality.   

 

REQUIREMENTS:

 

Education: High School diploma or equivalent required. Associate Degree in Occupational Safety, Safety Engineering, Fire Science or other Social Science field preferred.  

 

Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience in safety and loss protection required.

 

Certification/License: Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable by the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must comply with annual driver’s license review and insurability standards with the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Will be required to complete and pass pre-employment drug testing.

 

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Must have working knowledge and be able to use word processing and spreadsheet and data base software. Must be able to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, in a diverse range of audiences and settings. Must have problem solving skills. Must be able to work in a high stress environment and handle difficult situations. Position requires being on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Must be able to work with minimal to no supervision. Must be able to establish and maintain effective communication with co-workers, supervisors and the general public.  Must be flexible and available to work various shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays. Must maintain confidentiality. Native American preferred.
