This global master roaster role contributes to Starbucks success by elevating coffee roasting expertise for the enterprise, including developing and coaching technique, philosophy, and the art and science of roasting at Starbucks. In this role, you will act as an esteemed subject matter expert in all aspects of coffee roasting operations. As such, you will represent the best of Starbucks coffee roasting to our internal roasting network, external suppliers, and our 400,000+ Starbucks partners who wear the green apron every day. This Seattle-based role supports coffee innovation exploration and roast qualifications for new products, processes, and equipment across the enterprise.

 

As a global master roaster, you will…

 

·         Provide expertise in coffee roast theory, art & science, and actively applies knowledge to improve processes. Create network-wide definitions of roasting standards and specifications. Operate across all roasted coffee production, process controls and equipment.

·         Demonstrate a deep understanding of roasted coffee quality management principles, industry standards, and emerging trends, providing valuable insights and guidance to the organization.

·         Act as coffee roasting subject matter expert during roasting events and demonstrations to wide array of audiences, including internal and external stakeholders and media

·         Lead roast commissioning, qualification, and verification trials for internal and external new products, processes, and equipment including documenting trials

·         Lead Coffee Roast Quality Audits and subsequent corrective action resolution plans and implementation with localized teams

·         Actively develop, train, coach and mentor roastery and roasting plant operators to

understand current and new technologies and processes

·         Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams inside and outside of Starbucks to remove roadblocks to quality and efficiency

We’d love to hear from people with:

·         12+ years of coffee roasting experience

·         5+ years developing coffee roast profiles to achieve specific flavor and/or brewing characteristics

·         Experience roasting on 3 or more different roasting machines and control systems

·         3+ years of experience with direct or indirect people leadership with proven track record of coaching and mentoring others

·         Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, including as a spokesperson for companywide and external engagement events

·         Q Arabica Grader certification and/or strong coffee sensory skills

·         Ability to apply knowledge of multidisciplinary business principles and practices to achieve successful outcomes in cross-functional projects and activities.

·         Ability to understand written policies and guidelines, specifications and safety standards.

·         Skilled and experienced in ERP Systems, Oracle OMS, MS Office applications.

·         Mechanical aptitude to troubleshoot machine failures and make adjustments.

·         Ability to work in accordance with quality, safety and sanitation standards, policies and guidelines.

·         Familiarity with food safety regulatory requirements and global standards including Preventive Controls for Human Food and the Global Food Safety Initiative

·         Experience with the GFSI certification schemes

·         Basic math skills

*If you are working in CA, CO, IL, LA, ME, MA, NE, ND or RI, you will accrue vacation up to a maximum of 120 hours (190 in CA) for roles below director and 200 hours (316 in CA) for roles at director or above.  For roles in other states, you will be granted vacation time starting at 120 hours annually for roles below director and 200 hours annually for roles director and above.

 

The actual base pay offered to the successful candidate will be based on multiple factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location, and internal equity.  At Starbucks, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at the high end of the range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent upon the facts and circumstances of each position and candidate.
