A Derivative Settlements Engineer plays a critical role in the financial services industry, focusing on the technological solutions and operational processes that ensure the accurate and timely settlement of complex financial derivative transactions. This role bridges the gap between financial operations and software development, requiring expertise in both.

 

Role Overview 

The Derivative Settlements Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining scalable, high-quality software applications and systems that support the post-trade lifecycle of derivative products. This includes ensuring efficient processing, reconciliation, and settlement of transactions across various asset classes such as Foreign Exchange, Credit, Rates, Equities, and Commodities. The role often involves driving technical transformation and implementing modern engineering practices to enhance system reliability, performance, and efficiency.

 

Key Responsibilities

Software Development and System Design: Design, develop, and maintain robust, scalable, and high-performance applications for processing millions of derivative transactions daily. This includes hands-on coding, code reviews, and refactoring to maintain high engineering standards.Process Optimization and Automation: Identify, analyze, and implement improvements to end-to-end trade lifecycle processes, leveraging automation technologies to optimize operations and increase Straight Through Processing (STP).Reconciliation and Issue Resolution: Participate in the reconciliation of ledgers, investigate and resolve breaks (cash discrepancies), and perform root cause analysis for errors to enhance operational accuracy and integrity of financial data.Stakeholder Collaboration: Collaborate extensively with various teams, including Operations, Product, Tech, Change partners, Traders, and external clients, to understand business requirements, facilitate proper funding, and develop solutions for intricate challenges.Risk Management and Compliance: Ensure all day-to-day queries are handled within required SLAs, escalate issues above materiality thresholds, and contribute to managing settlement risk and exposure. Adherence to controls and understanding of regulatory requirements are crucial.Project Participation: Support and manage strategic projects, applying change management skills to ensure seamless adoption of new processes and technologies.

 

Required Qualifications, Capabilities, and Skills

Education: A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Financial Engineering, Mathematics, Finance, or a related engineering field is typically required.Technical Proficiency Strong proficiency in object-oriented programming languages such as Java or C++.Experience with scripting languages like Python or Perl.Hands-on experience with UNIX systems.Deep expertise in system design and strong problem-solving skills to create resilient, high-performing, and secure applications.Experience with modern engineering practices like Agile, DevOps, CI/CD, trunk-based development, test-driven development (TDD), and behavior-driven development (BDD).Domain Knowledge Understanding of financial derivatives across various asset classes (e.g., Credit Default Swaps, Interest Rate Swaps, Equities, Commodities).Knowledge of trade lifecycle principles, cash movements, funding coordination, and settlement processes.Familiarity with financial regulations (though not explicitly stated as a core "engineering" skill, it's implied for the financial context).Soft Skills Excellent communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills to manage diverse stakeholder groups.Strong time management, organizational, and prioritization abilities to work under pressure.Analytical and problem-solving skills, with an ability to conduct root cause analysis.Self-starter with a strong desire to learn and adapt to a fast-paced environment.
