Graphic Information Systems (Water & Wastewater Market Sector)

The GIS group, falling within the water and wastewater sector, provides comprehensive geospatial services across all market sectors. Leveraging the full suite of ESRI software, we support most groups within DOWL, including engineering, geotechnical, hydrology, surveying, planning, public communication and environmental services. Our team utilizes the most appropriate tools to enhance project outcomes, from ArcGIS Field Maps and Survey123 for field operations to the development of internal and public-facing web maps, web applications, and Story Maps. We also provide cartographic support, manage raster and vector data for geospatial analysis, and ensure seamless integration of field data into our GIS workflows.

Summary

The GIS Technician 2 is responsible for performing basic Geographic Information System (GIS) services with limited oversight using ArcGIS software for a variety of civil engineering, planning, permitting, and survey related tasks. The person in this position is expected to exercise a strong work ethic, and solid organizational and technical skills. A GIS Technician 2 should demonstrate proficiency with a full range of GIS fundamentals and be able to quickly learn and apply new skills. This person is expected to work well with others, absorb and apply constructive criticism, and seek guidance from more experienced members of the team as necessary.

Project Delivery

Produces the following under limited direction/oversight from others:

GIS database adds/updates/deletes Complex figures Publish services to Portal Data output in tabular format Basic field data collection Understanding Budget and Schedule

Moderate understanding of scopes, schedules, and budgets. With guidance, predicts the level of effort for individual tasks and successfully deliver tasks within that level of effort. Monitor results on moderately complex projects.

Industry Standards and Regulations

Understands and employs the following:

Database field data types The basic parts of a map figure (e.g., north arrow, legend, title, etc.) Topology Basic portal & data store management Basic understanding of coordinate systems Client Interaction

Limited direct client interaction, commonly in group settings. Responds to emails, attends meetings, and answers questions/comments with limited autonomy.

Level of Work/Accountability

Performs moderately complex technical work on projects for the assigned market sector. Operates with limited autonomy and work is supervised and reviewed by more senior staff.

Education and/or Experience Bachelor's Degree preferred Years of experience required: 2 years Years of experience required with advanced degree: 1 year Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Must have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record Mathematical Skills

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to create and interpret graphs and understand statistical analysis.
