Job Overview:

Under indirect supervision, the Genetic Counselor provides genetic education, counseling and psychological support to patients and their family members who may be at risk for a variety of inherited oncology conditions,

Identifies families at risk, assesses risks, interprets information about disease, analyzes inheritance patterns, reviews testing options, interprets genetic test results and in concert with a physician, reviews available medical management options,

Qualifications:

Required:

Masters degree in Science from an accredited Human Genetics Program, specializing in genetic counseling,Board certified or board eligible by the American Board of Genetic Counseling,Interpersonal skills to effectively interact with patients and referring physicians,Prior experience strongly preferred,Successful Completion of all Orientation Programs

Salary Range:

$83,156.00 - $117,458.00 Annual

The above reflects the anticipated salaried range for this position if hired to work. The compensation offered to the candidate selected for the position will depend on several factors, including the candidate's educational background, skills and professional experience.

Essential Functions:

Assesses and interprets the risk for occurrence and or recurrence of genetic conditions in the family and discuss with the physicianDetermine appropriate genetic screening and diagnostic testing based in risk factorsConstruct and analyze a patient s family history and all relevant medical problems in addition to addressing the reason for referralCoordinate the processing and shipment of samples for genetic studiesCounsel patients on the nature of the conditions in question, including the contribution of heredityCounseling includes risks, benefits and limitations of genetic testingDevelop, produce and distribute educational materials to patients and referring physicians regarding current advances in medical genetics and genetic counselingDocuments all counseling issues discussed with patients and services provided including interpretation of test results and management plans, as discussed with the physicianAppropriate documentation sent to patients and referring physiciansInteract with referring physicians to clarify reason for referral, request necessary medical records and educate about referral processCoordinate follow-up and management of genetic testing results with physiciansProvide critical genetic information to patients in a non-directive, empathic, culturally sensitive and educational appropriate manner, thus empowering patients with the ability to make autonomous decisionsProvide supportive counseling and referral to other relevant medical professionals, support groups and community resources when appropriate,
