Vibra Healthcare
Overview Juncos Hollinger Racing is seeking a dedicated and skilled Gearbox Technician to join our team! Responsibilities Position Summary: A Gearbox Technician ensures the reliability, performance, and smooth operation of the race car's transmission. The gearbox is a key component in transmitting power from the engine to the wheels, and its performance is critical for competitive racing. This role is to ensure that the car’s transmission system runs smoothly, impacting performance, speed, and reliability on the track. Key Responsibilities: 1) Assembly and Disassembly of Gearboxes: a) The technician is responsible for assembling, disassembling, and servicing the gearbox during and after every race or test session. This involves detailed inspection of parts for wear and damage. 2) Gearbox Inspection: a) Regular inspection of the gears, shafts, bearings, and other internal components is necessary to ensure that they are in optimal condition. Any signs of wear, cracking, or other damage are addressed immediately to prevent failures during a race. b) The technician checks the precision of the gearbox’s internal components using specialized tools like micrometers and calipers. 3) Maintenance and Servicing: a) Routine maintenance includes replacing worn or lifed out components, changing oil, and checking seals to ensure proper function. They must ensure the gearbox is built to the specifications needed for each track. 4) Installation and Removal: a) The gearbox technician works closely with the race engineers and mechanics to inspect and update the gearbox to determine if it needs to be removed from the car. They may be involved in ensuring the proper alignment and fitting of the gearbox to the rest of the drivetrain and rear suspension. b) After a race, the gearbox may need to be removed and serviced or replaced based on its condition. 5) Gear Ratios and Differential Setup: a) The technician is responsible for changing gear ratios and differentials, which are critical tasks. Gear ratios are tailored by the engineers to each track, and improper ratios can significantly affect the car’s performance. They are also responsible for changing the settings of the differential based on the driver’s and engineer’s preferences. 6) Testing and Data Analysis: a) During and Post-session, the technician might review data from the gearbox sensors (such as temperature and oil pressure) to identify potential issues or areas for improvement. b) They may also assist with testing gearboxes on dynamometers to validate their performance under race-like conditions. 7) Problem Solving: a) If a driver reports issues such as difficult shifting or odd noises from the transmission, the gearbox technician must quickly diagnose the problem, decide on the appropriate fix, and implement it under tight time constraints. 8) Stock and Inventory Management: a) They manage tooling and spare gearbox components to ensure that all parts are available and ready, before each event. They will document lifing codes for each component to ensure parts are replaced at appropriate intervals. 9) Maintaining Professionalism: a) IndyCar racing is a high level of motorsports that requires a professional attitude and appearance. They will maintain a neat and organized workspace that is attractive to current and potential sponsors and promotes an ability to maintain reliable success. 10) Teamwork: a) Has an active role in pit stops. b) Assists the crews in working on the cars when gearbox tasks are complete. c) Ad-hoc tasks as requested by Department Head and/or Team Principal (or designee). Requirements: • 2+ years of IndyCar or similar level motorsports • 5+ years of lower-level motorsport or 5+ years non-racing mechanical experience. • Experience in fast paced and high-pressure environments • Ability to work to strict deadlines Physical Requirements and Body Mechanics: As part of our Indy racing team, this role involves physically demanding tasks that require strength, coordination, and safe body mechanics.
