ABOUT THE POSITION 

The Long Beach Community College District is currently seeking one full-time tenure track English as a Second Language Professor commencing in the Fall 2026 semester. This assignment also includes curriculum and program development, participation in department, division, college committees, and participatory governance activities. Faculty are expected to collaborate across disciplines, to make effective use of student support resources, to participate in ongoing professional development, and to assume leadership roles both within the department and in the institution. The teaching assignment may be at the Liberal Arts campus, the Trade, Technology, and Community Learning Campus or other college teaching locations. The assignment may be day, evening, weekend, online, or off campus and is subject to change as need. Faculty positions offer the opportunity to assist a diverse group of adult students in achieving their educational goals. The ideal candidate embraces the overall mission of the Long Beach Community College District with a focused commitment to excellence in teaching and student success and to understand and serve the needs of the student, department, college, and community, and commitment to work collegially and collaboratively within the department and college community.

Qualifications

 

Minimum Qualifications:

 

• Master's in TESL, TESOL, applied linguistics with a TESL emphasis, linguistics with a TESL emphasis, English with a TESL emphasis or education with a TESL emphasis, OR

• Bachelor's in TESL, TESOL, English with a TESL certificate, linguistics with a TESL certificate, applied linguistics with a TESL certificate, or any foreign language with a TESL certificate AND master's in linguistics, applied linguistics, English, composition, bilingual/bicultural studies, reading, speech or any foreign language, OR

• The equivalent

Evidence of a sensitivity, understanding, and ability to manage the classroom environment AND effectively provide instruction to community college students of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.

 

Desirable Qualifications

 

Professional knowledge and teaching experience

 

• Demonstrated ability to teach academic writing, reading, speaking, and listening to multilingual students.

• Demonstrated knowledge of and current experience in second language acquisition theory and research.

• Recent experience working with community college students in ESL courses.

• Demonstrated experience in teaching using different modalities, including asynchronous and hybrid online courses.

• Knowledge of current issues and educational trends in teaching ESL in a community college setting.

 

Institutional experience

 

• Participation in curriculum, program, and faculty professional development.

 

Sensitivity to students of diverse backgrounds and abilities

 

• Use of evidence-based, culturally responsive, and equity-minded instructional practices, with a sensitivity to issues of diversity and ability to motivate and teach community college students of diverse ethnic, racial, and economic backgrounds, sexual orientations, genders, cultures, and learning styles, as well as students with disabilities or varied levels of academic preparation.

• Experience in creating a dynamic learning environment that prioritizes instructor/student interaction.

 

Experience with data-driven assessment

 

• Experience administering, evaluating, and analyzing Student Learning Outcomes and in self-reflection and responding to an evidence-based assessment of student learning.

• Experience with diagnostic and classroom assessment practices and their applications and a demonstrated ability to address equity gaps.
