The Position:

Gavilan College seeks qualified applicants for one full-time, tenure-track, 10-month faculty position teaching Biological Science beginning August 2026.The assigned teaching schedule will comprise a variety of biology lecture/lab courses and may include teaching days, evenings, and/or weekends in various modalities and campus locations. Faculty are expected to devote as much time as necessary to perform the professional responsibilities of the position. Participation in professional activities, curriculum development, and campus committees is expected. The individual selected will share leadership roles with other full-time instructors in coordinating and developing curriculum, using culturally responsive pedagogical techniques, and coordinating the overall Biology program.

Essential Duties

 

• Teach 14-16 lecture-equivalent hours per semester, which will include in-person instruction at the Hollister and Gilroy campuses as well as online teaching; may include evening and weekends. May also include teaching Dual Enrollment (high school) and/or Higher Aspirations (justice impacted) program courses, as needed.

• Create inclusive, student-centered learning environments that support the growth and success of diverse learners through thoughtful course preparation, effective teaching methodologies, and meaningful feedback.

• Cultivate relationships with students to support their growth through office hours and regular interaction (both in person and online).

• Create, assess, and update curriculum to meet the needs of diverse students in all modalities.

• Actively engage in department and division meetings, events, and initiatives.

• Contribute to campus committees and decision-making processes that support the college's mission and goals.

• Participate in ongoing professional learning, particularly around anti-racism, diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.

• Adhere to department, division, and district policies and procedures for faculty employees.

• Evaluate student work using clear criteria relevant to the course content and student learning outcomes and provide feedback to students in a timely manner.

• Develop and implement a variety of effective teaching and assessment methods including the use of computers and information technology to engage student interest and support for a variety of learning styles

• Develop effective online course materials and build online learning communities that meet accessible online course requirements and Title 5 §55211 Effective Contact Policy requirements.

• Maintain and submit accurate records according to published deadlines (i.e., grades, syllabi, attendance reports).

• Continue in related professional career development throughout employment and remain current in the field through course work, conferences, workshops and other appropriate means.

• Perform other related duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications, Education, and Experience

 

Minimum Qualifications: 

 

• Master's in any biological science

OR 

 

• Bachelor's in any biological science AND Master's in biochemistry, biophysics, or marine science

 

OR 

 

• The equivalent

 

• Demonstrated ability to develop and employ culturally relevant course content, anti-racist pedagogical techniques, and effective practices for engaging students who are diverse and/or from historically underrepresented groups.

Preferred Qualifications and Attributes: 

 

• Meets minimum qualifications to teach Chemistry courses.

• Evidence of successful implementation of equity practices in the classroom which enhance the success of underrepresented populations in STEM fields, including Latinx, African Americans, and women.

 

• Recent participation in professional development programs or post-graduate degree programs designed to enhance pedagogical effectiveness and extra-curricular support for students preparing to enter STEM higher-education classrooms and laboratories as well as allied health professions.

• Experience writing grants, developing programs, and recruiting students for programs such as MESA.

• Willingness to examine and remediate one's instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

 

• Ability to conduct classes in a virtual learning environment using Canvas or other methods of remote learning.

• Experience and skill incorporating elements of diversity, equity, and inclusion into all areas of responsibility.

• Strategically build support and participation among colleagues for equity-related initiatives.

• Teach through positive race-consciousness and embracing human difference.

• Communicate and work cooperatively with colleagues (within discipline and college-wide) regarding course offerings, programs, and activities that would enhance the development of the department and college.

• Knowledge of current laboratory safety procedures.

• Experience in maintaining instruments used in teaching Biology.
