Job Location: Remote US

Anticipated Start Date: 10/27/2025

The US base salary range for this full-time position is provided below:

 

Junior: $93,750 - $189,750

Mid: $165,000 - $345,000

 

The range represents the amount bnsf | tech reasonably expects to pay for the position based on the level, scope, and responsibilities of the role.  Individual compensation and level of position offered is determined by the hiring location and additional factors including but not limited to job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. In addition to base pay and bonus eligibility, BNSF offers a comprehensive benefits package.

Multiple Roles Available from Junior to Mid

We’re building a modern internal platform that brings together virtual machines, containers, storage, data services, networking, observability, and developer experience, all managed as software. This platform spans multiple environments including data centers, edge systems, and cloud regions.

 

Everything we do is built with open source, permissively licensed tools. We believe in versioning, automation, traceability, and developer empathy at the core.

 

We’re hiring infrastructure and platform software engineers to help build, operate, and evolve this platform. You’ll join a focused team working on high-impact systems that enable developers to build and deploy safely, quickly, and efficiently.

 

Responsibilities

This is a full-stack engineering role focused on building internal platforms, APIs, and automation services that streamline the software development lifecycle and improve developer productivity.Design, build, and maintain APIs, automation workflows, and internal services that support efficient development, testing, and deploymentDevelop and operate CI/CD pipelines using tools like GitHub Actions, Jenkins, and ArgoCD, with a focus on reliability, scalability, and self-serviceCreate internal platforms that simplify common engineering tasks such as code reviews, debugging, and environment setupAutomate repetitive or manual development processes to reduce friction and increase velocityIntegrate infrastructure services delivered across our hybrid cloud (pubic, private, and edge) as a unified developer experienceCollaborate with engineering teams to identify pain points and deliver solutions that improve the developer experienceMaintain clear documentation and onboarding guides to support adoption of tools and servicesMonitor and troubleshoot development environments and pipelines, escalating complex issues as neededPromote best practices in version control, code quality, security, and automation across engineering workflowsWork with software engineers, SREs, infrastructure, and product teams to ensure alignment and smooth operations

 

Basic Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experienceProficiency in languages such as Go, Python, or JavaExperience building and consuming APIs, SDKs, and automation frameworksFamiliarity with CI/CD tools like GitHub Actions, Jenkins, CircleCI, and ArgoCDUnderstanding of service delivery models including public cloud, private cloud, and hybrid environmentsExperience with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), service mesh, and infrastructure automationExposure to IaaS, PaaS, storage systems, Linux, and both SQL and NoSQL databasesExperience with observability tools such as Prometheus, Jaeger, Grafana Tempo, OpenTelemetry, and/or engineering experience with observability tools at Netflix, Uber, etcKnowledge of secrets management and identity and access controlStrong problem-solving skills and ability to diagnose technical issuesEffective communication and collaboration skills across cross-functional teamsExperience participating in design reviews, incident retrospectives, or RFC processesInterest in open-source infrastructure and developer platformsEagerness to learn and grow in areas such as infrastructure, automation, and developer experienceAbility to quickly learn new technical concepts and adapt to new technologies

 

Junior Level:

Up to 5 years of experience and/or strong relevant open source/personal projects related to developer tools, automation, or infrastructure servicesCuriosity and drive to learn about internal platforms, CI/CD systems, and developer experienceExposure to APIs, scripting, or automation in personal, academic, or early professional settingsInterest in building tools that improve how developers build, test, and ship software

 

Mid-Level:

5 to 10 years of experience and/or strong relevant open source/personal projects related to developer tools, automation, or infrastructure servicesProven ability to independently deliver features that improve developer workflows or platform capabilitiesExperience building or operating internal developer tools, CI/CD systems, or automation servicesExperience collaborating across teams and mentoring junior engineers.Familiarity with designing scalable systems and contributing to architectural decisions.

 

Preferred Qualifications

Experience building and operating observability tools at digital native companies (Netflix, Pinterest, etc) or public cloudsContributions to open-source projects that enhance developer workflowsExperience building and operating internal developer platforms or tools, including developer-friendly SDKs and APIsExperience with edge systems and hybrid environments.
